CHDK Offers Auto Focus AND Optical Zoom in VIDEO!

I was "Stunned" that a premium compact like the G12 did not offer optical zoom in video mode... (even my sx110 offers zoom!).
I mean holy crap. Yet the good ol' CHDK folks were able to "enable" it from Canon's crippled default firmware.

I find that exciting and well - maybe this is old news to some or many - but its good news to me.

Next - Trying to make my card "Bootable" with CHDK
Next: See about enabling AUTO ISO in Manual Mode, if possible
Next: paste the script "enabling TTL in Manual Mode"

Not much posting of G12 photos on this thread so I hope its ok to converse about enabling "Expanded" G12 features. I'm learning but will assist anyone else to bring their G12 up to the level of feature performance that Canon should have offered in the first place... ;)

I've done the auto focus and zoom while in video with CHDK. I can understand why they left it out in the default firmware. If you don't intend on using the sound from the video, it's nice to have. If you are wanting to have sound, you will hear the motor zooming in and out and every time it focuses.

On another note, here's a shot from earlier today.

Oh Point Taken!

I'm actually trying to remember if the G12 has AF during video by default - or if it was just the zoom that was not enabled.

regardless - I'm happy to have both, and will use 'zoom' sparingly.

Great macro! I'll have to read up on your G12 accessories because I have no idea what they are... :D

On another note.... I Got TTL working in Manual Mode Using my EX320! Yaayy!
Don't expect any evidence in the G12 Menu though - CHDK lets you know its enabled on the LCD and that's it. But - it works very well ~ (just tried the TTL with the built-in flahs... ehh...)

Thank-you and sure - do you have specific questions?

If you want a star-burst effect for the sun you need to set your camera to 'M'anual and set your aperture to f/7.1 or f/8, then set your shutter accordingly for the exposure you want. Often trial and error get the best shot - looking at your LCD - seeing if there is enough detail in the shadow areas, etc. Of course having knowledge of Lightroom or editing software always enhances photos.

adding a little contrast and clarity can accentuate sunbeam details.
Getting a unique angle helps - I was low tot he road for the first one. I'll probably re-edit that one to remove the sighs on the left side of the road, and show more of the road below.

I'm happy to answer specific questions. All Exif details are included on flickr - click on a photo - on top of photo click "Actions" - then View Exif Info, which shows particular shutter speed, ISO, aperture, etc.

Clearly not my best, but interesting photos nonetheless. These are from the Colorado Springs, CO area taken 20 minutes ago. It's dry here!

For fun - and what the heck why not - I took shots of the moon to see what detail, if any, could be made out....

When I tried focusing - it looked like a bright tiny fuzzy blob on my screen, nor could I get MF working for me... so I was surprised to get at least this amount of detail

first is cropped with Zero editing, second one was put through the lightroom wringer.

Not bad image quality for 140mm on a P&S!
  ;) :D

I thought the car turned out satisfactory, but was disappointed with the lack of bokeh with this particular g12 shot, sooo....

I used Photoshop Elements 10 - Depth of Field Guided Edit - I was too lazy to do it using a Layer Mask - but I should have because I see the guided Edit changed the exposure of the vehicle.

My aperture for the shot was f/3.5 so I'm surprised there was not already background blur - I guess I should have been back further from it - and used more zoom - which seems to be a typical trick to get background blur (bokeh)
