We have guests that have the neighborhood in an uproar! They have been making late night stops to people's porches and messing things up. I think they are just someones pet pigeons - at least one has a band. They may not be unusual to an expert, but they are unusual for our neighborhood (Rochester, NY). Can anyone positively ID the "feathered rats"?

Rather than rats, these are somebody's pets. They look like "Tumblers" to me, but not "Homers". The band should give the owner's name. They look a bit like a breed called "Black Nun".

Mike, thanks for the ID. I wonder if they aren't a little confused by one of the neighbers feeding them? Maybe if they stop, the birds would go home?

Over here in the UK its often the case that if the pidgeons are ringed they are in fact racing birds,
taken to various destinations and then released to fly back home against the clock.
sometimes they will land and then stay at that location for food etc, some never returning home to complete the race...I guess you would like them to pack there bags and move out !!!

thought I should send you another pigeon from here , I gave it a good map, but had to clap my hands to move it !!!
heres the pic to prove it....

Martin, that's a good photo of a Wood Pigeon, a wild bird, unlike the Black Nuns. Very sharp image!

Yep it sure is a wood pigeon, we have hundreds over here.
It should be sharp, it was taken with a brand new 300 mm f2.8 is L , fitted to my 1D Mk2 just had to shoot something as a test for in flight action , the full size image is fantastic.

Martin, so are you hand holding that new lens? I want to step up from my 300 f/4 to a 500 f/4 but I am concerned about the weight. I walk around a lot and I do not use a mono or tri pod.

Mike
This was hand held in order to follow the bird taking off stabiliser in mode 1.
details were...
1D Mk 2 plus
300mm f2.8 is L fitted with the 1.4 extender... so 420mm focal length... AV mode at f4...
1/5000 sec ... and -1/3rd step. just mind blowing quallity at a price !!!
I cannot see any dif in quallity with the 1.4 fitted,

you need a mono pod with this lens as you wont hold it for long it's 2.5 kilo, taking hand held is no problem but if you use for any length time your arms will want to drop off, I just shot near 2000 pics in 2 1/2 days at a jazz fest and my shoulders were feeling it afterwards and that with mono pod.

Hope this info is also useful to others.

Jfrancho.
thought your 100% crop shows good detail especially in the whites ,not always easy, well done.
also sorry to hi-jack your post.
