Working with the tethered 'live-view', 'focus-nudging', technique described by John_N, in this posting:
https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=945582
(hopefully he didn't patent, nor copyright, that method)

Obtained this - 57 separate images stacked using Zerene.
Canon 50D, tethered to my laptop, utilizing EOS Utility, 100mm Macro, ISO 100, f2.8, 37mm extension tubes, auto-focus, approx. 6 inches from lens to subject, 'butter-tub' diffuser - used 'intermediate' focus bump.
Berries are approx. 1/4-inch (6mm) diameter.
Berries were released back into 'the wild' after posing - ;)
I realize that there is some 'ghosting' between the berries and the leaves/stems - this was done more as an experiment in the technique rather than working towards a great final image.

Also experiment with first cross-eyed stereo-gram - not anywhere near as good as Lord V's - I think perhaps too much lateral distance between shots??

Hope this helps.
Screen shot of EOS Utility, tethered, 'live-view' mode. Arrow points to focus controls. Fine, medium, coarse focus controls in both directions - sorta strange watchin' your lens focusing remotely.

That is so cool!! I've used live view remote shooting for various things, but never realized I could use it for focusing. That will be extremely useful when I'm taking astrophotography pictures.

Looks like it works well !
Not sure about the stereo - a bit small to view properly but think there is not enough separation rather than too much ?

Nice shot. I wonder if that lens suffers from diffraction. Sharp in the center, soft at the edges. Do you remember the f/stop you used? Also, I wonder how AF overcomes the problem of re-focussing at every shot.

I use tethered shooting a lot with my 1D3 and shooting through the microscope. Canon has some really lame software. I saw the focussing buttons there, but they are always grayed out, so I never knew they worked at all. Duh..... glad I read this thread. :)

I told my daughter that I was now going to start taking her netbook into the field with me when I go hunting things to shoot for a focus stack, or for astrophotography.

Used f2.8, wide open - will try some shots with a smaller aperture, this is a lot of fun! I purposely wanted the narrowest DOF for testing the technique.

Lens must be in 'AF' in order for tethered focus to work - if you have lens in 'MF', the focus controls will be 'greyed'. The system doesn't attempt to auto-focus, it's all controlled from the software. Give it a try and post some of your shots.

I set up and tried using the controls. They are still grayed out, but they do work. That's what was confusing me. The dropdown boxes are greyed out also, probably why I never bothered trying the arrows. I see no Live View or anything else in the dropdowns. My EOS Utility version is for the 1D MkIII though, and may be an older version.

Have you looked on the Canon website for an update? IIRC, there was one for my T1i in July or so.

Hey guys. I finally got a copy of the EOS sdk from Canon yesterday. This allows writing programs to do tethered capture etc just like in EOS Utility and DSLR Remote Pro. I'm actually writing a standalone program to do the nudging automatically, for the requested number of shots. Just press 'Start' and hold the camera :) Already have pc live view working - with a few bugs because the documentation is absurd! :( Adding the focus stepping code should be a no-brainer though.

Is anyone interested?

Dave.
