First go and I have only 100 pics on this battery. I have the 17-85 lens on the body. Many pics had the flash on. What is wrong? I get 1500+ on the D100 with the large flash.

The XT's battery capacity/life is substantially smaller than that of your D100's..... and as you should already know, using the flash and IS reduces the total # of shots per battery charge.

Check on pg 23 of your manual under battery life. Was your battery fully charged? Your count sounds low, but as you see from this page, there are lots of variables, probably the one most affecting battery life (other than the flash) is the auto focus usage and mode. There is little likelihood of your getting 1500 with this camera and this battery. Additional batteries (non Canon) are relatively cheap, and of course you can go for the battery grip.

Sounds a bit low to me but batteries when brand new can take a few charge/discharge cycles to come upto full capacity. Also as already suggested, get a couple of spare batteries as it's always handy and if you don't mind using generic's batteries they are extremely cheap.

I do about 800 shots on one battery; but I never use the flash.

Actualy, I had to out the camera in "P" mode earlier to open the flash and clean the housing. It was full of crud :D

I usually do not use on camera flash (using an external flash) and got 700-800 shots per charge. 100 seems to be very low.

I forgot that I have two batteries in the grip on the D100. I have the grip for the XT and will buy another battery. Just got back from shooting a family party with the XT. Took 265 shots and the battery is still ok. Maybe the first charge did not do so well? Anyway the pics right out of the camera are MUCH BETTER than the D100's!

That number would be exceeding the camera manual expectations for 68 degrees F, but would be much more in line than 100 pictures.

Mine starts to flag from about 600 shots with no LCD preview.

Mitcon hit the nail on the head. A new battery needs to be charged and discharge about three times before it will work to maximum capacity.

I don't agree.

About the biggest factor is the use of the rear display. Some people use that display a lot, and it drains the battery with few photos shot.

Using a lens with I.S. is supposed to increase the battery drain by up to 25%, but that probably varies with the specific lens.

Could be. My answer was based only on my experiences and I don't use the display all that much. On the other hand, I don't think I have ever come close to shooting or trying to shoot 600 images on one battery without charging it.
My answer was intended to point out that there are lots of variables and the ones you cite are probably as great if not greater than my examples.
