Below are a few images from the past couple of weekends of the Cass Scenic Railroad and Durbin and Greenbrier Valley Railroads Durbin Rocket. Both railroads are located about 20 miles apart in Pocahontas County, WV and offer some of the best scenery of any tourist railroad in the East.

The Cass Scenic Railroads Shay locomotives push the passenger train up the grade as they approach Bald Knob, the second highest point in WV.

Nice series all around but #2 is simply epic!

Railfan excursion I take it?

Thanks, I had done a similar version of #2 before (below) back in 2007 but I think I have perfected how to get it so sharp at 1/4 now. :)

These were taken during regular tourist operations.

No, no. I should have explained. Unlike most railroads where the trains are pulled. The Cass trains are pushed up the mountain. That is one thing that allows for these unique views.

Thanks for clarifying and no, I've never seen a tourist/scenic railroad where the cars are pushed full time. Obviously in 3 and 4 they aren't so why would I assume they are in #2?

Trust me, you arent the first to think I was out on the front of the engine! It really makes you think. With the trains being pushed it makes for certain challenges when photographing them, but you can also use it to your advantage.

I do apologize, it was just joking around. I guess i was surprised since photography relies so much on the details of the eye.

Pulling the car would also make it quite un comfortable for the passengers looking at all of the black smoke billowing off the stacks.

Being a former train conductor i guess I noticed the push car right off. My advantage, sorry again. :)

Oh and to keep it on topic, awesome pics. All of the times i rode rail i never thought about getting a shot like that! Bummer for me.
