What I have, on a 5DII

17-35 tamron
35/2
50/1.4
100/2.8 macro non L
135/2.0

What I can borrow

17-40
24-105
24-70
70-200/2.8is

What I plan to bring:
17-35/17-40 (one of these only, just thinking I should get the 17-40 because its Hawaii and probably more reliable, I haven't tested the tammy yet)
24-105
35/2.

Sound like a plan? Ifigure what's the point of my tele primes. Wonderful lenses (135 is my favorite lens) but it's Hawaii, no tight portraits here, I can do that in a local park. The 35/2 is my lightweight kit.

Yes I'll have a P&S, and wont' bring my kit everyday. I'm going to designate one or two days for photos.

The only time I ever grabbed a longer lens in Hawaii was while on a whale-watching boat. Otherwise, your set-up should work great.

Don't forget that a long lens will help you capture some of that nice beach "scenery".

When are you going? If it's during the winter months, and you are interested in whale watching, then you will want something longer. Whale season is from approximately December through February or early March. Otherwise, the 17-40, 24-105 and 35 f/2 will probably be fine.

When we went last winter, I had a 40D and used my 17-55mm for the vast majority of shots. The 10-22mm only got used at Volcanoes National Park (but it would also be useful if you go to Mount Haleakala on Maui, which we did not do last time), and the 70-200mm was used mostly just for whale watching. I only used it for a couple of landscape shots.

Scott, on Thursday :) I figure the 24-105 will stay on the most. The uwa for when I want that real wide shot and the 24mm won't go far enough, and 35/2 when I want a light weight kit.

Canonwhitelensesrule, hmm the 3 previous times I've been to Hawaii I just haven't seen that much "scenery" i see better scenery here in Southern California, honest to god. Although my last trip out we stayed out of waikiki where they would be anyway. heh.

+1. I agree. It seems like a well round kit.

Depending on your photography tastes, you may want to bring something with shorter minimum focus distance. When I went last winter I visited many botanical gardens and I took lots of pictures of flowers. The 24-105 isn't that great for that.

Long lenses are great for whales and surfers.

Loved Hawaii so much last year, we're going back this year again. It will be different, I was shooting Olympus last year and will be using Canon this time.

what u going to be doing here in Hawaii?

hiking i bring my 10-20, 17-55 and 80-200(pictures of birds). most shots are done with the wide.

beach, i use mainly wide angle lens.. but make sure u dont change lenses on the beach! that sand gets everywhere as well as the salt spray. surf shots, 80-200 works great (2x or 1.4x would help if far away).

last time i went hiking i brought my macro lens and had a blast trying to get shots of all the plants i saw.

I landed in maui on friday and my go to lens had been the 28-80mm 2.8-4.0 lens and my drain pipe. If I had the funds and the means I would go for the 24-105. Great all around range for my style of shooting but tight funds and great performance keeps me hanging into these old school lenses.

Hmm, mostly beachcombing, some hiking if I can convince the lady that getting attacked by mosquitos will be worth it (we both get bit, I thought I was the worse until I met her, my ex-gf would sit next to me and never get touched while I looked like I had measles or something), kayaking to the sunken island ... not sure if that is worth risking my camera gear! I may leave it in the room that day, she just bought a mediocre P&S waterproof.

I'm thinking it will be split pretty good between the wide and 24-105mm. I love UWA shots but don't get to shoot them enough, maybe this is my chance.

howzitboy, are you on Oahu? How is Waianae? I dont' plan on going during late evening night time, but there are some beautiful beaches up that way that I want to visit. I think we'll be fine, but just double checking as I hear conflicting stories. We wont' be lingering around nor use bad judgment. Everytime I get out to hawaii all the locals think I am one as well (I've had pidgin busted on me and I'm like, pardon me?) so maybe I won't stick out too much ... until I bust out a 5d Mark II

When I go hiking I usually bring my 17-40mm f/4.0. When I go to the beach I usually bring my 70-200mm f/2.8. If I'm going for just a landscape or sunset I usually bring my 16-35mm f/2.8. They are all paired with my 1Ds Mark III.

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick
