Does enyone use Dell studio XPS 9100?

My old workhorse gave up on me, I have no intentions to fix it after I tried so many things, and finally after looking for half decent PC I came across Dell studio XPS 9100 and I ordered it last night.

After reading all good comments about it I did not see lot of photographers writing reviews on this item.

So my question is will I be happy with this unit?
Will it perform good, is it fast enough, do other photographer use it?
etc.


The one i have ordered has i7 930 2.8GHz processor
8G DDR3 RAM
ATI 5770 graphics
1TB HD 7200
tHX sound

That should be a pretty fast system. You'll be more than happy for photo editing (or really pretty much any kind of) work.

Many professional PC's have Intel Xenon CPU's, but it is costs way more, about $2000 and up for the same system and RAM size. Would like to have the option to test the two processors but I guess that would not be possible at least for now.

I am wondering now, how the RGB range will be with my NEC MultiSync P221W monitor and the new PC?

I had an XPS with an 8 core Xeon at one job, those things fly.

8 core Xeon would be nice but the money is tight

You can get benchmark scores at cpubenchmark.net. For most here workstation type components are not necessary.

Xeon are server processors. You are paying more for the reliability and redundancy as much as you for the extra performance. You also typically need to go Xeon if you need more than one processor in a system.

You have to be careful with benchmarks, because performance can be very specific. A general CPU chart may not tell the full story for gaming or video creation, etc.

Here is a Photoshop CS5 specific test from tomshardware.com that clearly shows i7's slaughtering the competition:
