Just wondering, never shooting with a long length like that before, would it be reliable for action shots on tripod ofcourse. I like to shoot action shots.
I'd say the levels of action lenses would be the 85 1.8, the 70-200 f/2.8, the 300 f/2.8 and then it keeps going -- there are amazing shots from the 500 f/4. The 100-400 is, like was mentioned above, pretty good in good light, then you have to keep upping your ISO since you are shooting at f/5.6 for longer focal lengths. But it's still a very useful lens within those parameters.
Since shutter speed is a big need for action a tripod will not do you as much good and will actually impede you somewhat, but as Jay said a monopod is quite common just to ease the long strain of a shoot and add some stability and it's easier to mobilize when you are using a monopod.
