need a tiny camera for travel/something that i can stuff into my camelbak or take with me hiking. no, the g-series doesn't qualify as 'small.' i've pretty much narrowed it down, cost and performance wise, to the canon vs the panasonic.

both are virtually similar price-wise. specs wise, the lx3/lx5 seem to have an edge over the canon.

thoughts?

Do you want a 28-105 lens or a 24-90 lens?

Overall image quality is similar, but I prefer color rendition on the S95. There are a lot of image comparisons out there. For example, http://www.imaging-resource.com/IMCOMP/COMPS01.HTM (external link) and the galleries on http://www.dcresource.com/ (external link). Those sites also have reviews of both cameras which are worth reading.

Is a hot shoe important to you?

Does size matter? The LX5 is bigger (most published specs don't include the lens) and heavier.

Consider ergonomics. How each feels in your hands and the controls. I find the controls on the S95 much better. The front ring is great and the menu system is more user friendly.

The LX5 generally focuses faster

I got an S95. YMMV.

there are plenty of reviews on in the internet about these cameras. only surpise is, LX-3 still reviewed favorably!

..and i rather have 24mm than 28mm on the wide end, not much different between 90mm and 105mm though.

one 'cool' thing going for the Canon S90/95 is that they are small but they slippier than wet soap! becareful you Canon S90/95 owners out there.

Body: Canon 5Dc, (Coming soon <<<6Dc, maybe I shall wait for 6Diic with TouchScreen!).
Other Favorite Camera:
Flash: YN560
Lenses: change all the time!

so i got an lx3. they're cheap on adorama (as long as you can live with a silver one) and are compatible with the adapter ring that lets you install filters and "lenses." while those features would make it no longer portable they pushed me over the edge. that and i've always wanted to own something leica-ish.

There is a guy in UK making leatherette for LX3. Here is mine:
