In celebration of the 100th anniversary of Naval Aviation, the call has gone out to all owners or operators of historic naval aircraft to come to North Island for fly past activities and/or static display on February 12, 2011.

Time for me to start using my contacts...

That should be a busy weekend. There are kickoff ceremonies at the USS Midway Museum the same weekend.

There appears to have been a possible change for this.

Roger Cain tells me that some of the guys in NorCal who were going to put some very fragile "USS Langly-era" birds on trucks and bring them down for static display have now decided they won't because the base has decided to not let civilian aircraft land.

They will have to stage out of Montgomery or similar and can only participate in fly past activities.

I haven't heard this from anyone else but I trust Roger's ear to the ground in his expanded neck of the woods.

This sounds odd as the 2008 Red Bull Air Races flew out of North Island. In 2007 and 2009, they were set up at Brown Field.

Maybe the security at NI has tightened up... Although I don't see how. They allow thousands of civilians on the base every October for the Coronado Speed Festival vintage sports car races.

If you know anyone over there John, I know of several different groups who could use some clarification on this.

This sounds like it is going to be great. And if all goes well I'll be living in San Diego then too.

Update: There has been no response to my e-mail yet. I'm leaving tomorrow morning at '0-Dark-Thirty for eight days in Pennsylvania so I'll be a little out of touch. When I hear something, I'll post it here...
