How the heck to I import edited RAW files into LR 3???

I cannot find this anywhere. I have files which were edited by someone else within LR3. I want to import them into my LR3 with the edits. I have the RAW files as well as the .xmp files but cannot--for the life of me--figure out how to get them into LR with the edits.

I can't understand why I can't find this info anywhere. I can't imagine I'm the only person to ever want/need to do this....

Thanks.

The likely reason is that most don't use XMP files anymore. But I'm sure someone can come along with the answer.

Anytime I do edits on another machine and want those edits in my main LR catalog I export those edits as a catalog and then import that catalog to my main catalog. No XMP files to worry about!

Shoot, I hope I can use it this way. Not quite sure why it wouldn't work as the xmp files were created by LR as well. Ugh...

Sorry if I mislead you. It should work fine, just not sure how as I don't use XMP anymore.

LOL! No worries.

Just trying to figure this out and it's quite frustrating as I cannot find info ANYWHERE. Been searching online for DAYS on this one. Didn't really think it would be all that difficult to tell you the truth.

It's simple. Make sure you have the xmp files in the same folder as the corresponding Raw files. Now, if you have imported the Raw files by default the edits won't show up but: select all the Raw files in the filmstrip then execute the Read Metadata from File from either a right-click in the Metadata choice or from the the top menu where it shows up in Metadata or I believe the Photo menu depending on whether you are in the Library or Develop module.

Now the "gotcha": if the photog processed those Raw file in a different "processing generation" from your Raw processor, your files will tend to look "different". For instance, if the photog processed them in LR3 and you open them in CS3 (or vice versa), then you may need to do some extra tweaks to get them looking "right".

Haven't tried, but I presume the following would work:

  • First make sure you have your LR catalog settings to "Automatically write changes into XMP"
  • Then import the RAW file from wherever you've stored it (make sure the modified XMP is not in that folder).
  • Make a simple edit on the image in the develop module (say, convert to B&W).
  • Close LR, and verify that an XMP file has been created in the folder where the RAW is located. Overwrite that XMP with the modified XMP file.
  • Restart LR and check if the edits are showing up.

edit: I see Tony offered some suggestions...hopefully that'll work as well...

Worked like a charm! Thanks so much!!!!!

Can you import the catalog that contains the photos rather than importing the individual photos into your existing catalog?

Don't waste your time here. Post this question on to the Adobe LR forums. Someone will answer it.

He's actually gotten several working answers, and has gotten up and running I believe!
