Played with syncing a Canon G12 today.... Anyone else using a small point and shoots with studio flash? Hoping to get some time to take the setup outside to experiment with overpowering the ambient soon. From what I understand if I use a sync cord I can possibly reach 1/2000th sec or max out the duration of the flash.

You might get some interesting looks when you take your scantily-clad mannequin outside for some test shots, Jerry. What are you using on the camera to trigger the strobe? Or does the G12 have support for this like the 7D and 60D? I just started experimenting with something similar. I have a PW II connected to my Elinchrom 600RX strobe and a FlexTT5 on the camera. I can shoot about sync speed that way, but I haven't been able to get 1/1000 shutter speeds yet (I still need to do more playing around with this).

Cameras: 1DX, 1D4, 20D, 10D, S90, G2

Funny you brought this up. Just yesterday I was looking at G12's for my son. I started looking at sync speed and wondered if it would be possible to do this. Glad you tested it out. my only concern would be the looks you would get when you pull out stands, strobes and a vagabond. Then reach in your pocket to get your G12. They do take great pic's though.

Coool... that's pretty sweet for the G12.

I'm just using a standard PW Plus II. The reason these small P&S cameras can do this is because they have a electronic shutter. This is not like standard High Speed Sync.

This works with any p&s which can take a radio trigger or some other means to trigger the off camera flash or strobe.

Below is a link to a test I did a while ago for another thread of similar discussion:

https://photography-on-the.net …hp?p=4641552&postcount=31

As you can see from the test shot, at 1/2000 shutter speed, only a portion of the total flash output was used for exposure (this should be less of an issue at full power output than partial output, though, for most strobes). This was with an AB800 connected to a G9 via PW Plus I, not II, units.

Because at 1/2000 you were not getting the whole output because of the duration of the flash.... Right?

Slightly relevant, folks using Hasselblad at 1/800th and Phase One's at 1/1600th used to report light loss, but once the speed's came out, the light loss was essentially non-existent. This was with Skyport's of course. But the duration still comes into play.

I'm not sure if it's the Pocket Wizard that's not allowing you to go higher but when I purchased the Canon Pro 1 about 6 years ago, I was able to get the sync all the way up to 1/4000 using studio strobes with no light loss. However, I was using the Quantums 4i Radio System.....

That's right, Jerry.

I did a similar thing with the G10, RF-602 and 430EXII.. I managed 1000th second sync speed..Check out the pic..

EXIF is intact..

Now I have the G11 I just might try it again but this time with my Nissin Di866..
