I have a question that might be of interest to many, both amateur and pro.

If you were dropped in a new town with nothing but your camera equipment and computer equipment, (including at least a 13x19 printer) and enough cash to get a place to stay and some food, what would you do (photographically) to earn some quick cash?

Hopefully, we can collect some tips here that might be useful for those looking to earn money with their camera.

Head to the local high schools and shoot games and sell photos to the parents.

I think the first thing I'd do is to trade something for some much-needed clothes cuz I don't have any according to your scenario.

Head to the nearest internet cafe, jump onto POTN and start a "how much to charge?" thread!

I'd start offering portrait services. Kids. individuals, events whatever I could do to scramble up some business. I'd probably still starve to death in the meantime, but all the other revenue streams are kind of indirect.

I think it depends on your community.
Is there a large group of young folks getting married? Then I'd consider wedding/engagement/family photography

Is it a retirement community? Then I'm not sure.

Is it full of married folks with new babies?
Then maybe baby photography or high school portraits if the kids are older.

Is is an animal loving area?
Then maybe pet photography.

Is it a commercial area?
Maybe product/real estate/corporate photography.

IMO, I think the best way to make money with the gear would be to sell the gear as well and get a real job. Making a living in photography seems hard, not impossible, but hard. I don't think they could pay me enough money to deal with those bridezillas.

I would walk around major areas or scenic ares for a day or so to get familiar with the area and scout for places to shoot while taking some photos. Then go to a local newspaper/magazine and place a classified ad to get some exposure for your business and hopefully some clients. Also offer some recent shots taken to get your name exposed to the community through the newspaper/magazine too.

If I had to have a cash shot ASAP? Are there any celebrities in the area? Can I sell a lens for tip money and start meeting bartenders and door men?
forget it. I have other tools i own that I can make a living with, and since it takes around five years to become a journeyman toolmaker, so I wouldn't have to compete with the local machinist's version of a GWC. I'd sell the gear and buy machinist's tools.
