I got tired of shooting in a wider format, which shows more of the context, but a full body/half body shot, I found to be banal. I went back to do more abstract performance shots which was more appealing to me.

So I went with a 70-200mm f2.8 IS lens and sat in the front row, about 10 feet or so from the performers and shot at about 200mm, getting super tight shots. They perform on a small stage with a red velvet curtain in the background, which can often be cluttered.

However, when they move into the spotlight, the bright light allows for a fast shutter speed but that also throws the background black, so there is no context to the shot, it's just abstract headshot of the performer with a black background (which I found to be cleaner). It was tough though as you are using a very narrow field of view on a moving subject with very dynamic lighting situation but it was different and fun and I liked the different look to the shots.

The B&W is nice :)
#1 and 3 are okay as well, but I'm not sure about the expression in #1 and the vignette on #3.

4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 is a bit "much of the same" IMO. I like #6 and 7.

I like #6 the best... the only thing that throws it off is her eyes.

How much light was available while you were shooting? There is going to be a Halloween provocative arts show in town here next weekend, and I'm thinking about going, but I cant decide which lens to take. I'd like to take something with a bit more reach than my 50mm 1.8, but my 55-250 needs quite a bit more light and I just don't know if it will do it.

It's basically a dark room with a stage lit by a few stage lights.
I think the 55-250mm lens maybe too slow to freeze motion.
The 50mm maybe better and crop it a bit tighter if you need to.
