Ok, so, let's say I want to spy on people from my van. How many stops do you think the factory window tint is? Just curious.

Yes, I am only kidding. I am in an ornery mood today.

You should probably count on 1 stop to the county jail.

aside from the implications and the joke...

you need to know the percent of light transmission through the tint..

I personally think it is more accurate to describe a transmission loss as a T-STOP rather than an F-STOP..

the F-stop is related to the focal distance over the diameter of the iris..
but you just mentioned "stops" so disregard the above diatribe..

if we compare a window tint to an ND filter then we can say that..
a dark tint can have as little as 3% light transmission and would be say be equal to a Neutral Density filter rated at ND32 or equal to 5 "stops"

a light tint can have as much as 50% transmission and can be say equal to a Neutral Density filter rated at ND2 or 1 "stop"..

maybe this helps? just a tiny little itty bitty bit?

Easiest way to determine would be to take a reading through the open window, another one with the window closed, and compare the two.

exactly- this aint film anymore, you can guess and try different settings till you get it right, but be sure you bring along a good supply of electrons and 1's and 0's. you're gonna need 'em.
