Best Way to Spend $400-500 on Camera/Lens for Beginner

I currently have a 50D, with an assortment of lenses (some L) that I've gathered over the last year or so, and recently, my brother's wife has decided that she wants to get into DSLR's. She will be learning, so she is a pro by no means.

My brother expressed to me, that he wants to spend between $400-500 on everything, and different things started flashing through my mind about what he could get. I am thinking used would be a good way to go, to get the most out of the limited budget, and a friend of his was trying to sell him a Nikon D50 with the kit lens, and a telephoto lens for around that price range. I told him the camera came out 5 years ago, and that there may be a better choice.

I know this is a Canon biased forum, however, he has no bias either way, so any brand suggestion would be accepted.

What would be a good camera to look for? I originally was thinking a used T1i would be a good find, because a lot of people are probably dropping theirs to get the T2i. I was thinking a kit lens would probably serve her well, and that may be the only lens she would need to get started learning, that way, she can decide, yeah, I think I need a telephoto or wide angle, after playing around with it, finding out what she likes to take pictures of (people, animals, or landscapes, etc.).

I haven't kept up with the Nikon side, so I'd have to take someone's advice on that.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Consider an advanced compact camera such as the SLR-styled Canon SX30 IS. (external link) For a newcomer to photography, the SX30 IS would be a better choice, and would more easily fit the price limits mentioned. Use that camera for a couple of years to learn the rudiments of the art.

Just for the info, I’m from Tli board. People are getting 7D and 50D after Tli.
But, I found a lot of new Tli or slightly used ones on private sale boards in Ontario and across the border. For 500 or slightly above with kit lens.
Kit lens is good for learning and even for pictures too

Wife…she doesn’t like Tli, she was hoping to use it, but no success so far.
Indoors in auto, no problems. Very good pictures. But outdoors, 90 % are out of focus.
She never has this problem with our old Fuji FinePix camera. I’m trying to teach her, but she just doesn’t want to learn.

haha that makes so much more sense. d50 is not a bad camera, better be getting it for less than 300 though. then pick up the nikon 35mm f/1.8 for about 200. couldn't spend your money better, unless you got a d40 (personal preference). that 35mm is an amazing lens. it rarely left my d40. too bad i have yet to find a canon equivalent. the d50 is all she needs to learn the basics.

Good choice. It can become 2nd camera when they want to spend more for a fancy DSLR.

The SX30 may be an option, I'll talk to him about that.

On that note, he found a D40 with 18-55mm lens, bag, 8GB card for $150...may be a good place to start...

Why not something like the xsi or xti? Might be a good start. My wife just got rid of her Xti and an 18-55 IS lens for under $400.

They could look at a Canon XTi with an 18-55 IS and a 50/1.8.

Or they could consider a Nikon D40 with a 35/1.8 and 18-55 VR.

Either is a perfect setup for a beginner. Give or take the IS/VR because that might push them over budget.
