Helen, as a representative of one of the top camera sellers in the world, you have a bird's eye view of the marketplace. I'm a businessman, and one that has learned over the years that "price" always seems to be the lure. No one considers the reputation of the seller until it's too late. There's a big difference between a bargain and a deceptive price. Unfortunately, most people shop on price alone, and we can all blame the Internet for the explosion of unscrupulous vendors.

It takes years to build a good reputation, and your own company has a great reputation. It's too bad that most people, especially newbies, just do a random price search and jump at the lowest cost. Also, it's easy to simply stop selling under one name and change to another. Crooks are crooks!

Adorama and your competitor B&H are the top shelf companies in my opinion. If I'm going to buy a high-dollar item, those are my only choices. If you look across the messages on this forum, you'll see that is the feeling of seasoned and experienced people.

Now, how to train the unknowing (or seemingly uncaring) to actually THINK before clicking on "buy" is the problem! My basic rule is "if it sounds too good to be true it isn't". It's too bad that many people must learn the hard way...

Great blog! Simple basic common sense will help most people avoid the scam houses. The rule to live by is... If a deal sounds too good to be true, IT IS!

A 70-200 2.8 IS for less than $2000? In general I find that grey market lenses from reputable sellers bottom out at 2/3rds of the price you would pay in store, any lower and it is a scam.

reading some of the positive reviews in resellerratings, it's funny how some people are clueless that they just got duped!

I was impressed that a representative from the company called me when I'd accidentally ordered the wrong battery as part of my purchase order.

.... and was charged twice! haha

Listen to what everyone is saying man, buy from a reputable website. Here is a thread where a member bought a 7D and basically got shafted.

https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=894898

He thought he was saving hundreds but in the end he only saved $72.00. Not worth it at all. If your going to buy from a site and are unsure look them up on resellerrating.com before hand. Or spend the extra cash and buy yourself a piece of mind at the same time.

Damn the 70-200 f2.8L IS II for a noob that sure is one hell of a lens, You will never have buyers remorse on that at all. That should be an excellent lens for gymnastics, fast & sharp.

If you have "buyers remorse" on that lens, to save you from too much sensory overload I'll give you 500 bucks for it sight unseen. That way, you'll be rid of the menace and actually put a few bucks back in your pocket!
