The 5D mark II is ideal for landscapes...you don't need AF for landscapes, especially if you get a Zeiss or tilt-shift lens ;)

With that said, landscape photography is more about technique than the equipment.

+1 to this statement. Very much about technique. the 7D could pull it off nicely.

The majority of my shooting revolves around my kids, their friends and activities. If the 7D would have been out when I bought my 5D MK II I would have bought it instead, the better AF and lower cost would have been a no-brainer based upon everything I have read about it. That said, here I am a bit over a year after the 7D was released and I still can't bring myself to sell the Mk II to fund a 7D purchase, I'm really hooked on the IQ.

Now I'm hoping a 7D Mk II will come out so I can pick up a used 7D for a good price. :)

Hi Tom I know how you feel. It took me over a year before I bought the 5D MKII. I owned the 40D and loved it but wanted a FF. I'm glad I made the change. I promise you you won't regret it at all. Wish I made the move early so I could get some good L lens but hey there's still lots of time. Good luck.

Contemplating getting a 5D MKII. I am currently shooting with my old 20D. Still love it but I am looking to get a solid camera to replace it and use the 20D for back up and limited drag racing shots. Looks like the 5D MKII will do everything that the 20D would and then some. I read that tracking fast moving objects may be an issue but then I see some really nice shots that were generated with the 5D MKII in the motorsports forum. So I am thinking that it will do fine for a what I may use it for periodically.

Mainly I am looking to get into Landscape and still shots (just random stuff). Been in awe looking through the Landscape forum and really want to get into that and learn how to do it.

Does anyone have any insight on the 5D MKII as far as drawbacks or things you don't like about it. I would like to hear the good and the bad from 5D MKII users.

Good:
Image Quality
High ISO

Bad - potentially:
AF - only 9 types, only centre one is cross type BUT: I personally have zero issues with it, heck, I wouldn't get any benefit out of the 7D's AF - I'm actually happy it's an AF normal people can understand out of the box :) - on that note - if as long as you can use the centre point only you should be OK with some limited sports shooting on the 5D MK II

I'm picking up my 5D2 tomorrow. I'm upgrading from a 450D.
My thoughts when I was deciding what body to upgrade to, was if I got the 7D, I'd still want the 5D2. So I got the 5D2.
You could also write down a list of "pros" and "cons" of each body down, then you can see what weighs up to you.
Just my 2c.
Is it Thursday yet? Man, I can't wait.
Good luck

I didn't need the list for my upgrade :)

I just said "if I upgrade then to FF" - left only the 5D MK II as a 1Ds or 1D is way too expensive - on that note though, I don't shoot sports.

And the pros and cons - well, yes, you can write them down, and yes, the 7D has more features - so does a 1Ds - but is it a better camera for what you shoot? :) That's the question.

Anyway - enjoy your upgrade :) it should be a nice step up in terms of handling :)

In my opinion, the common "negatives" we hear about the 5D2 are quite exaggerated.

Couldn't agree more with the above sentiments.

I believe (someone correct me if I'm wrong) that the 5D MkII has the same sensor as the 1Ds, but not the latters focussing system nor processing speed. Optics-wise I guess they are both pretty close to each other aswell.

So a 5DmkII has alot of the pro features of the highest spec camera for half the price :)

I agree with the speed concerns though, there is definitely noticeable (but acceptable) shutter-lag and fps is slow compared to 1Ds.

Regarding the 'standard' kit lens; I only bought the body originally (couldn't afford more at the time) and then went through lots of reviews about the 24-70mm and 24-105mm to decide between them. Went for the 24-70 in the end as I do fashion/portrait shoots and wanted f/2.8 - don't really need IS (and still haven't got on well with this on the 70-200) and the lenses I have cover all the focal lengths I need :)

well, the 5D II is considered a pro camera, just like the 1D series. however, the 1D series is more geared towards sports and action photography whereas the 5D II is geared more towards landscapes and portraits. both excel at what they were meant for.

If I could only have 1 camera body, I would choose the 5D2. But since I can have 2 or 3, I like the 7D as my other main camera. You can't have it all, yet with any system, so many of us choose both since we use more than one at a time. So, I recommend it for you. The 5D2 does the job very well and keeps going and surprises you with it's beautiful outcomes. But glass is really important, too. The 24-105 will be so much more amazing with FF.

I got my 5D II exactly 3 days ago with a 24-70L 2.8. This is my first Canon ever after having been using Sony's a700s for quite a few years now. At first I didn't want to make the move considering I had quite a few top of the line lenses from Sony which were some big investments but after testing out the 5D II which is a completely different ball game and trying out the 7D and a few of Nikon's models I was convinced that the 5D II was for me. So as of now i've been trying to learn this thing as fast as I can and as of now i love it.
