On Halloween afternoon, a local community has an extraordinary casual assembly of costumed people milling around downtown. I plan to take my dslr with 100mm f/2.8 macro lens. Shooting will be on the fly with no opportunity to pose the subjects or evaluate composition.

I would appreciate any tips or suggestions that might increase the odds of ending up with some memorable images.

Thank you kindly.

People in costumes generally like to be photographed...just ask. If you have a wider lens than the 100mm, carry it instead.

Actually, people in costumes are often very willing to pose. Don't be afraid to take them to the side, somewhere with a nice background, and make them pose for a minute (then thank them for their time !).
I'd also bring a wider lens, if a costume is striking enough you'll want to get a full-body shot and 100 mm is way to long for this in a crowded place. I've often covered costumed events with a 50, and on a crop it's too long for full-body - but shorter is a problem because of DOF.
