The cameraman's close call and is unhurt. I hoped it is insured.

Cool! It's probably an outer haze/UV filter so it's easily replaceable. I'm sure the camera manufacturer already planned for an incident like this.

+1 for another reason why UV/haze filters are best!

No wonder when I look at all the MLB games I see some holy enormous amount of flares and ungodly amount of IQ degradation which I just couldn't explain why. Now we have the answer. Time to protest, people!

A good UV filter, a cheap way of protection.

If the article is right, it still cost $20k to replace that filter. OUCH !

I will be very upset, had it been my lens. Very very upset.

You guys know that those big white lenses don't have front filters. They have the front element which can be easily replaced....

There's no way a simple filter costs $20k to replace. I'll bet the filter was just the first piece of glass smashed to pieces by the bat.

Meh, just slap on a Tiffen filter for $200 instead of $20,000 and you're good to go!

No, really, those big lenses can't take front filters. They don't have filter threads.

Joking, joking...

You'll need to screw on a square filter!

they have insanely higher prices on pro gear, a captive market and very, very low volume = orders of magnitude higher price ratios than for consumer stuff

all the same $20,000 still sounds like too much

It's an optically flat piece of neutral glass
It's $5K to repair
They are insured
TV Trucks usually carry one or two extra lenses (when possible)
The folks in the maintenance shop had another one boxed up and ready to ship the very next morning and it crossed paths with this one going back to the shop.
