I'm looking to up my knowledge of off-camera flash photography, and I want to invest in a wireless flash system which would allow me to use my flash off the camera somewhere else, and I would still be able to trigger it. Now I know you'll look and see I only have a 430EX, but for what i'm doing, it's completely fine, until i get the 580EX II when I find a niche. So any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

RF-602s are cheap and pretty reliable!

Meike MK-RC7's are even cheaper than the Yognuo RF-602. Basically the MK-RC7's are clones of the RF-602, with a few pluses.

How do the Pocket Wizards compare?

Depends which Pocket Wizard you are talking about. Both the MK-RC7 & the RF-602's are manual (NON TTL) triggers, which mean, that you need to make adjustments on each flash regarding the power. E-TTL means that you can make adjustment on the camera. Pocket Wizard has manual and TTL triggers. Pocket Wizard Plus II's are comparible to the MK-RC7 & RF-602, but the PW are more reliable and more expensive. Pocket Wizard also have TTL triggers, such as MiniTT1 & FlexTT5, which are also expensive. You can control the flash power on all your flashes through camera with TTL triggers. With the addition of PocketWizard AC5, you can control the flash power on each flash up to 3 groups.

Pocket Wizard's are significantly more expensive. However they seem to have better range, but it's unlikely you will be shooting from over 50ft away. They are better built as I've seen them stepped on or fall to the ground as a lightstand toppled over and they continued to work. Can the chinese products withstand that type of abuse? They may, but I don't intend to find that out. In terms of functionality they are pretty much the same. There is one difference though where I prefer PW, light/flash meters. Some light/flash meters have PW triggers built in so you can easily trigger your strobes to obtain readings. With the Meike I have to buy an extra transmitter($20) and adhere it to the light meter. If I were to do it again I would still go with the Meike or rf-602 systems as you cannot beat their price and reliability seems just as good. I have quite a few devices in the 2.4ghz range and none of them seem to cause any interference.

Axtually, the Meike MK-RC7's are better and inexpensive, compared to the RF-602.. I own both the MK-RC7 & the RF-602.

Here are the things I like with the MK-RC7...

1. Uses AAA batteries.
2. Transmitter has a locking mechanism.

At this point I don't want to spend too too much, but I do want something that will last and is compatible with my equipment. Is the manual vs ETTL a big thing? At first, I will be using it to sharpen my skills, then maybe go on to shoot outdoor portraits as well.

Cybersyncs are inexpensive and I've found them to be reliable.

By what standard?

PW's use an outdated wireless standard, provide less features, are less convenient, take up more space and are what, 7-8 times more expensive than RF-602's or MK-RC7's. Even as far as reliability goes, they are good, but certainly not fool proof:

I'm not completely underwriting that yet either. I just got the MK-RC7's and haven't done too much testing with them yet, but there are already some things I don't like. The locking pin is great though. The lack of a "catch" on the receivers that keeps them from sliding "through" the hot-shoe for example is one minor part where I would call the 602's "better".

Much more importantly though, I have actually missed a shot already with the MK-RC7. That doesn't mean much yet, since it's only one so far, but that's 100% more than I had with the 602's in the same time period :D.

Also, at least on my 7D, the MK-RC7's sync to 1/200th, while my RF-602's sync to 1/250th.

That's all splitting hairs though since I would whole-heartedly recommend the MK-RC7's or RF-602's over CyberSync's, PW's etc. any day of the week.

So would this be the RF-602 that I would get for my camera?: http://www.amazon.com …TF8&qid=1287967974&sr=8-1 (external link)
After reading the Flikr reviews on both the Meike and this, the RF might be a better choice. The Cybernetics and Pocketwizards are a bit pricey, as this is just an experiment i'm doing to see how I like this stuff. Eventually I'll step it up and go for the pro-level, but these will suffice for now
