I know, I've already posted tons of Black Skimmers and this should be the last of them. I just thought these were so cool as the immatures have learned to skim and fly. There seemed to be a lot more young ones since last weekend. I couldn't get many of these resized for this forum without losing detail (even though they are within the size range), so here they are:

I have tried taking bird shots with my 70-200 f2.8. It is very hard. You are right on the action here. What lens are you using. I would love to get to the point a can stop a bird in flight with my camera. Nice job.

Thanks for your comments! I use the 400mm f5.6 L lens for all the bird shots. Handheld with a high shutter speed, usually 1/1600 or better, basically as fast as I can. These were ISO 200. These I had a pretty good lead on, as I followed them around the shoreline where they were skimming and then as soon as they got close enough I started snapping. Good luck and post some of your flight shots when you get them!! That's a nice lens you've got there. Maybe slap on a teleconverter to get more length. Sometimes it's actually easier to manually focus during flight shots, especially on very fast or erratic birds, like terns. Though I think with your lens and a TC, you can still autofocus. Not sure though.

Very nice shot here, I have never seen the young ones skimming and this one looks to be skimming in some pretty shallow water here.

Thanks everyone for the comments! Yeah, I should have mentioned that...these skimmers were skimming in almost no water at all at times, just a glazing of water over the sand. Amazing!
