Battery Voltage / Charger

Something always confuses me with battery chargers. I charge a NiMH Energizer 2650maH battery in my LaCrosse BC-9009 charger. I watch the voltage go from 1.50V to Full.

I take the battery out, and put it in a couple hours later and it's at 1.36V. Did it just lose 10% of the power in just a couple hours? I understand discharge, but that's crazy.

It's showing the V display. It hits that 1.5V level on these AA batteries, shows full. I take them out. Wait an hour, put them in, and it's lost it's charge.

charging is different, just like a car. When your car is running it is charging at 14.x V. Without the alternator and the car not running, your battery will be at 12.x V.

The output voltage of the battery is not linear with capacity consumed. A NiMH battery is nominal at 1.25V and the 1.5V you see is overcharging (topping off). It will drop fast to 1.25V, hold there for quite a while and then drop very quickly at some point.
