Controlled burning, or 'back burning' is used to create small controlled fires to reduce the amount of flammable material in the path of an uncontrolled fire.
LOL. Yes, I know. I was a firefighter for a few years and actually got to witness this.
Really, I was wanting to shoot fire at the HotHead, but he would enjoy it so was looking for an alternative, lol!

Fighting fire with fire is a pretty common technique in the realm of forest fires. Establish a clear fire line well ahead of the fire....and then start another fire to burn back to the initial fire. As the fire burns it provides an ever widening span of clear area. Eventually the fires combine and go out due to lack of additional combustibles.
