Dumb question. Why do we use the for Fast when we talk about size of the aperture lens opening? It can be very confusing, as I consider a fast lens a lens that focuses quickly.

Kinda feel sorry for the other temporary owner as well. Great story, Kasper is chipped as are all the rescues that go through purebredcatrescue.org.

It is sticking at the higher elevations. There is enough that the local ski center is going to open. Too warm down here....just an occasional flake mixed with the rain.

Sounds like California...

You should try reading people's handwriting from a century or two ago. Some of the census records I read from the 1850s on are darn near indecipherable! And, forget trying to read personal letters from back then. The writing styles of that time were very different from today. A doctor's prescription slip today would look like a penmanship award winner compared to the stuff I try to puzzle over on a daily basis...

Many years ago a secretary sent something I had written back to me with the words "For heavens sake Neil use print!"

Now I do and it is completely legible and as a result of practice just as fast as script :-)

Like Neil, I went to printing and completely dumped the cursive stuff once I started into post secondary studies. My handwriting was pretty bad, but with all the drafting I took, my printed word is very legible, though usually not that neat.

I started printing in the Navy. Being a Quartermaster required me to keep logbooks and sometimes the entries came rapidly. The logbooks had to be legible so I learned to print quickly and clearly...

That letter would just fall on deaf ears, this is a very common occurrence on flights.

Maybe, but it will give some measure of satisfaction to write and send it... I think I'm going to put something on my blog as well.

Well, we've been talking about "fast" lenses since before they invented that new-fangled "autofocus" contraption. Actually, it's because at large ("fast") apertures, you can use a faster shutter speed than you would be able to if the max. aperture wasn't as large.

5 more days!! Almost had a heart attack packing a bag. I filled it up about half way and thought I'd weight it to see just how much I have in it... Saw 26 on the scales and freaked out (only in my mind).. Since airlines limit to about 23-26kg. And I had hardly put anything in!! Then I realised the scales were in lbs... talk about a pheeeeeeeeeeeeeeew moment!!

Undecided on whether to take my tripod or not...

It has nothing to do with speed of focus (as some people try to say) as the term was used way before auto focus was even thought about.

The lower number the f/ stop = the wider the aperture = faster the lens.

So there is a relationship between the shutter speed and the aperture, therefore an f/1.2 will allow you a faster shutter speed in identical lighting conditions than an f/2.8, ergo the lens is faster.

(that is my take on it anyway :-) )

<< EDIT >> Jon, I did not see your reply before I posted this, it's good to see that we are in agreement, even down to the dating of the term :-)

I have a kraken on my lap...just like an infant...except he's purring. Holy cuteness. I look at all my cat scratches...back at him purring up a storm and think...he terrorizes by day and cuddles by night. Cat must have told him that women can't resist bad boys that have a cuddly side.

 Yup.

normally I have too much attention deficit to listen to a whole album....but I have to say that Clapton's "Unplugged" album is AWESOME. And I mean that in Neil's sense, not Bill & Ted's....

night kids.

Love that album. Time to dig it out and stick it in the ol cd player.

Bittersweet.

One of the other local rescues here (no, not THAT one) had a dog up for adoption for months. They had rescued it from one of the local shelters where it had been for quite awhile, no chip found, no one claimed it.

They were at an adoption event with the dog, and someone recognized it, then called someone they knew who had lost their dog almost a year earlier. They didn't live in the area, but made the journey here and sure enough, it was their dog.
Talk about some happy tails!
