I live about 90 miles inland from the Mississippi Gulf Coast with winds expected here in excess of 120 mph ... :( ... and to top that off I work for a Hospital and have to go in in the early am hour. Too many big trees around my house has be a little worried.

Thanks BE ... I just hate the fact of not being at home with my wife and son during all this. Had to give them a crash coarse on running the generator. Prying that my roof doesn't get opened up in anyway.

Check out this projected Strom Surge map for the New Orleans area: Its in .pdf fromat (external link) and may not be dial up friendly.

Source: Surge data from LSU Hurricane Center

1) FIRST TO GO
Unprotected areas in Plaquemines Parish could flood first Monday.

2) THE BETSY SCENARIO
Hurricane force winds are projected to top levees in eastern New Orleans, pushing water into the 9th Ward, the Michoud area and even into Mid-City.

3) SLIDELL SOAKED
Large parts of Slidell could be inundated by 10-11 foot storm surges.

4) PUMPED-UP LAKE
Easterly winds in advance of the storm could pump water from Lake Borgne and from Breton and Chandeleur sounds into Lake Pontchartrain, raising the lake’s surface by 12 feet.

5) OVER THE TOP
Waves equal to half the surge height or more would top the surge water and could overtop levees on the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain and around Chalmette.

6) GOING ASHORE
As Katrina moves inland and the winds come from the north, the high Lake Pontchartrain waters could stream across St. Charles Parish and turn east along Airline Highway into Kenner.

Oh, it'll still be there.

You'll need scuba gear to get to it, but it'll still be there...

Sounds like 90 miles inland is safe from the worst danger... But those winds and the rain could still hit you pretty good, eh? Stay safe and hope you don't get too much extra business at work.

Anybody heard from Bluedog? Surely Internet chatting is his last concern, but then, maybe there's something we can do to help him. Be nice to at least know what's happened.

He hasn't posted anything since before the hurricane hit, but being 90 miles inland, it's reasonable to assume he's safe. Since he's working in a hospital, chances are he's very busy, and likely to remain so into the forseeable future. None of the hospitals in the immediate area of N.O. and the Gulf Coast are really functioning and have sent their patients to inland facilities.

I simply can't imagine what all those people are going through.

Yeah. Thanks for the geography. 90 miles didn't look lke a lot for that storm, just so its not behind the leveys. Can surely imagine there's no internet yet anywhere around thereabouts. Not to mention no time for chatting much less a few photos.
