Looking for a new laptop and I would prefer to get one that I can do photo editing on. I am learning to shoot RAW and process from there. I would like to be able to work on a laptop. Is this even possible? Can it be done with a laptop without major glitches and wait times? If not I will have no choice but to go with a desktop.

Not really sure what I need to be honest. Recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I need to get something that I can keep for a while without having to constantly upgrade to keep things going smoothly.

I use my Vaio as my photo editing platform
I can run LS3 and CS5 together with many other windows up with no hiccups
I run a crap processor(2.0 GHz Dual Core Centrino), but run a 512ATi graphics card and 6gigs of RAM

You could always go Mac

|Nikon D700| 24-70 2.8G | Sigma 50 1.4 |SB-800|
and a bunch of Strobes

Of course it is possible. In fact, there are many people who prefer to use a laptop only. Probably because of the fact that once they are done working at home, they can take it anywhere and still have a great amount of power coupled with the portability feature.

You don't really have to worry about lack of power in today's systems. Top of the line machines have far exceeded minimum requirements for even today's demanding programs. Multitasking will not be an issue at all.

I use a Macbook Pro as my primary system. Even though I don't take it a lot of places, I still prefer to use it over a desktop.
