Macro DSLR Speed Challenge #95
In the Morning

This week your challenge is to shoot a macro photo of something you normally encounter in the morning. Whether it's dew/frost on the grass, part of your morning breakfast, or even your personal grooming items as you ready for your day... almost anything goes as long as you shoot it in the morning.

So after you scrape the sleep out of your eyes and can actually focus on things, go grab the camera and show us something from your world in the morning.
(Obviously keep it in good taste folks. Don't get too personal.) :)

Challenge #95 begins when posted, and ends Saturday at 6pm eastern time (I think that's 11pm UTC), October 30th 2010. (You get a few extra hours this week.)

Standard Rules apply:
Photo Submissions:

1. Camera - Any Canon DSLR camera
2. Lens - Any lens, or attachment that can give Macro photos (ex. extension tubes, bellows, macro filters, reverse mounted lens and of course a true macro lens.).
3. Time - any on-topic photo taken at any time is eligible, although photos that have won other competitions should NOT be entered.
4. Size - Please see the Image posting rules.
5. Post-Processing - do whatever you like and the host will decide if it works.
6. Posting -
* ONE MACRO PHOTO per photographer in each challenge.
* Photo Name/Title in the message.
* Camera model & lens used in the message.
* Post brief Exif data including ISO, shutter speed and aperture used in the message.
* Notes - anything you feel you need to explain.
7. Commenting - No commenting during challenge. When the posting is closed and a winner has been declared, comments can be made in this thread.
8. Questions - Use PM
9. Have FUN!

One challenge every week, on the following schedule:

* New Topic - After winner is declared.
* Posting Starts - Right after topic is announced.
* Posting Ends - 6pm Eastern time October 30th . Winner will be announced shortly thereafter.
* Winner from this competition decides the theme of the next one (and judges it for a winner) after this competition is closed.

Thanks to those who took the time "in the morning" this week to get a photo for the challenge! I guess mornings are not as easy as I thought they'd be as a macro subject.

Here are a few comments:
Imeddy - Shower Time!!! Amen to the morning shower! I have to have mine to get going each day myself. Nice capture on the shower head, not too much freezing the motion of the water but not too much blur in it either. I hope you kept your lens dry!

Jason C - Sight Ah, I remember contacts. Actually I wish I could wear them again. Looks like you made good use of that new Sigma macro lens. Great detail in the shot and focus on the lens. I'm guessing that was a little tricky since you were shooting with the other hand (or was it on a tripod?).

John B - Good Morning I wake up to faces like that every day myself but mine usually don't get in my face. They just sit on my chest until my alarm goes off. Then they fuss at me until I feed them. I'm sure it wasn't easy getting a shot like that of your feline friend since they tend not to be patient for up close candids (at least mine don't), but you pulled it off well.

I'm giving this week's win to Jason. The clarity and simplicity of the shot really appealed to me. You're up dude!

I tried to get a little water blur but didn't really know how. I was hand holding and using a flash. I had it set on 2nd curtain and tried with a slower shutter speed but all my shots looked the same.

I love the contact shot. I was also thinking, how did he hold the camera and the contact at the same time.

Lisa, thanks for the challenge and the nod. You chose a very good topic that could have been taken in many directions.

John, loved the image and that shot was on my short list for this comp.

Imeddy, I assume your name is Eddy..., your shot was nice and crisp. Good job on the WB, too.

Did I hand hold the shot, umm, no. The 1D MKII weighs something like 50+ ounces with battery, and the Sigma weighs 33 ounces. I used my Manfrotto and a remote wireless switch. Still, my finger was under all of that strain holding up that contact so it was moving around a bit.

In the contact's reflection you'll see part of my rig, and that is a no-no in my book if it's not meant to be part of the composition.

What I wanted to do with the contact shot, I could not do at the time (long story), so this was the back-up shot. When I finally choose a subject for a submission too a challenge, as well with most other shots I take, I shoot various angles and setups so I have a variety to choose from...

Anyway, thanks for the kind words, I'll post the next Challenge tomorrow in the PST A.M.

Terrific shots, all. Jason, yours made me yell "WOW!" Well done. Wish I had a macro lens to participate in the next one - look forward to the entries.

Thank you.

Macro is is just a set of extension tubes away...Another method is lens reversal. There is an older Canon zoom which is popular for this usage, and is cheap.
