Might be useful for some people:

Rebuild a Lumedyne Medium pack, using "racingpacks". These are batterypacks used for RC cars:

Since these are already assembled, it saves you from quite a bit of soldering. Because there are wires attached to the ends you do need to solder, it won't overheat the batteries that easy.

Each contains 6 Sub C sells, so you'll need three. Best bang for the buck was 3000mAh, cost me €20 each at Conrad (external link)

You need to "split" one of the packs to get 2x9 instead of 3x6 cells.
Quite easy to place the PEPI sensor in it's regular place and solder the wires together. Got a new battery pack with a lot larger capacity (lasts as long as my original "large" battery I'd guess) for €60 and a bit of time.
Works well with the Lumedyne trickle charger. Using a fast charger is probably a bad idea since original Lumedyne cells are NiCd instead of NiMh.
(Crappy iPhone image, sorry)

Don't know. Might be able to, if I know what "small black" you are referring to…
Here is a link to the image I mentioned in the OP, I hope it keeps working:
