New XT owner here

Heard about you guys on my RC Helicopter forum. Looking forward to picking up some tips and tricks in still photography. I do a lot of video and run the 'iMovie FAQ'.

Although I have had a digital I am still trying to get my head around setting ISO without film.

Practice! Practice! Practice! Take pictures of everything, not just one thing and read as many books as you can about Photography. Over time you'll get better and better.

Welcome, you'll learn tons. The ISO will go to 1600 but I would try to stay under 800, 400 and down would be best.

Neat image is a good program to get which will get rid of noise in your pictures.

Works the same way as for film. The digital guys stole the term to explain it does the same thing as in film. Lower ISO requires more light - has less grain (noise). Higher ISO needs less light - higher noise. You don't change the film, you change the sensitivity of the sensor.

I assume the ISO numbers are supposed to be equivalent to film ASA/ISO, but can't attest to the accuracy of that.

Welcome to the forums. Great bunch of people here and a wealth of helpful knowledge and a great place to share. The 350D/XT is a great little camera and a quite capable unit, working the ISO isn't that hard and you will come to use it easily with practice. As said the 350D/XT has an ISO range of 100 through to 1600. Only I wouldn't limit myself to staying under iso 800 if the light wouldn't allow the required shutter speed. I shoot mostly between 800-1600 with mine and while you can notice some noise at these levels it certainly still gives a good usable image. Any image that has more noise than you like can easily be cleaned up with noise reduction software like Neat Image.

Hi there DD, i got the same cam, and trust, you can get SUPERB images.
Now all you need is some NICE glass, which makes all the differene really!
Changing iso on the XT is so simple, just press the shortcut button on the back of the camera.
You wont need to use a high iso with a good lense, unless you are doing dark/dimly lit shots, and even there is V usable. If you go into the custom functions, there is a function which will reduce the amount of grain on long exposures, but the camera will 'think' for the same lengh of time the shutter was open for.

Thanks all for the ISO hints! I have had the camera only 2 days and I am about to surpass 200 shots! I seem to learn better by doing and it is nice that the images files save a lot of the setting within the file. This helps me with the "Why does this pic look so much better than this one?" questions. After having a little compact digital camera for so long... now I wonder how I ever put up with it

I am betting I will be looking for a lens (or two) sometime in the near future as I have had a few times where I could not frame the shot like I wanted but after I moved closer the, opportunity was gone. (I am sure everyone can relate)

The owner of "the spot" is a BIG photo fan too. He is a picture of one of his camera rigs with his Canon 20D mounted. All the other gizmos are GPS, gyro, receiver, speed governor, etc. I am thinking about a BIG electric bird myself for the AP work. Gas is a pain sometimes but it is a lot cheaper route to take a camera in the air when compared to a large, quiet, clean electric.
