I cannot believe this is anything more than a way to increase their prices. Those lenses are sharp wide open. There is not a single industry demand for them to improve. With the exception of weight those big guns are all flawless.

From what i've seen on MTF charts the big difference in performance is with the new Mk III teleconverters as well as the weight reduction (the 400/2.8 shed 4lbs! supposedly the diet on the 500/4 and 600/4 is equally astounding) the new IS and focus modes as well as the new interchangeable tripod collar Gear, New and Old!
