Lawsuits?

I'm not a wedding photographer, and doubt I will ever be. I'm very curious though when reading through posts here what are the things that you can get sued for? What are the grounds and types of damages? Can you have a damages waiver limiting damages put into contracts if local state law allows it?

Lawsuits can be for anything. I can sue you cause I don't like your face, however I won't win, but I can try. Usually with photography a lawsuit that has merit will be for breach of contract, and in regards to your question it would be the client claiming the photographer didn't provide what they said they would.

I have no idea what the typical damages are, but i can imagine it's not cheap.

Yowch, I was reading through some of the threads here that came up with a seach for lawsuit, and I'm convinced now that wedding photographers have got to have some serious intestinal fortitude.

You can get E&O (Errors and Omissions) Insurance that covers real or perceived oversights.
