I think you master plan is sound! From looking at the 5D specs, I think the 20D wins hands down for what you want.

Sounds fine to me with the possible exception of getting the Tamron 1.4 (or is it 1.5?) TC. I understand you can still autofocus with that.

I would recommend the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 over the 17-85 for your walk around lens. Not as wide, I know, but it's sharper, faster, cheaper, and it will still work if you ever move to a full frame sensor body.

Is it really sharper?

I can only detect one flaw in your reasoning ... I'm not sure whether your Pro1 will see much action after you buy the 20D. Best regards,

Andy I will be using the Pro1 when I am out in my Kayak. It fits well in my deck bag.

Thanks to all that replied. I felt my reasoning was sound, but it's great to have the opinions of so many knowledgeable people.

The 20D is better for Wildlife. Look at WWW.bobatkins.com (external link) comparing the 5D and 20D. 20D wins out on shooting wildlife

I don't see the 5D doing much to the 20D, however isn't the 20D replacement due early 2006. That may put pressure on the 20D pricing, and open up an additional option. I know those who wait for the next update never execute.

Of course it is. You can mark it on your calendar because that's (Jan 06') when I will have the money for my 20D. It doesn't matter to me though, because Whatever the next new thing is, as much as I may want it, the 20D as is now will do everything I will need it to do and do it well.

How's that for thinking clearly?:D

BTW my prediction for the replacement for the 20D, which I will call the 36D (hows' that for marketing?) will probably be 14 megapixel, FF, 8 FPS and be under $3000.00 U.S. It should be out in Jan 07';) Hey, I could be right.

Considered going for a 1Dm2 instead? I've just upgraded from a 20D (with grip) and, believe me, there's no comparison :)

sorry, couldn't help it! Slap my wrist...

Yes, but it's about $3400.00 just for the body, correct?

You could be right, but wouldn't that out perform the FF 1D series.
