If rugby is in the open on a sunny day, 55-250 would be fine. Indoors or after dark you may need 2.8 aperture, depends on how bright the field is. telephotos and action require higher shutter speeds, probably about 1/1000th. Can turn up iso, too, 1600 at 5.6 is 800 at 4.

....I am most interested in general photos of the Kids and some nice portraits, my son plays Rugby and I am desperately trying to get some good shots of him in action, also I occasionally have some delusional thoughts that I am a wee bit “arty” and would love to take some nice landscapes and macro`s.
.....
The good news for me is there seems to be a few options:

• Nifty 250
• 70-200
• 70-300
• 18-270 (I love the idea of this)
• 18- 105 + 2 x exdender

I like 50-250 range for getting close to kids and candid portraits. Fifty and less are good for indoors, but outdoors it kind of useless for this kind of photography (IMHO). Even 70 is too short.

If you are going to capture some sports events - 100mm and 2X might be too short to slow.
I don’t know if 55-250 would support extender. 70-200 non IS – no problem, it will works with non-expensive non-Canon models.
Landscapes, this is why I have 70-200. It has no external rotation at all, it means you could you use slide-in (Cokin and others) filters and polarizer.

If you up to close ups, 70-200 has full time manual focus. Which is handy for outdoors.

It has constant aperture from 70 to 200 and it is has good IQ, colors and range (70-135) for portraits.
