i still dont know too much about DSLRs and the lenses available. i dont have the biggest budget in the world but i am finding myself in need of a fast wide angle lens. dont have much use for telephoto lenses. i would love to have the 16-35L but have no way of paying for one.

what affordable lenses are out there that would be great for video with my 7D? my thrifty 50 is great but tends to be hard to focus without an easier focus ring to work with

also would love for it to be like a 50mm because of the 1.6X crop on the 7d so like in the ballpark of a 30mm. i dont know anything other than canon, and basically my friend who is a professional photographer basically just told me to stay away from tamron and would be better to spend good money on quality than buying cheap stuff. im just trying to figure out how much i need to save up. thanks guys.

the canon lenses above are great.

however, i prefer the Zeiss ZE look great projected as well. they are tack sharp for both stills and video. i have a 50mm and 85mm primes, and love em, and almost use them exclusively. but if u can afford these, or find a sweet deal, jump on it.

check em out. im pretty sure you will be pleased with the results. worth the extra $$$ if u got it.

What sort of subject you'll be shooting (and budget) should determine your lens choices.

16-35mm is sort of waste for video work just based on its cost. 17-40mm is better option. The best all-around lens for video might well be the 24-105mm. The image stabilization is a must for mid to long range. thus, 24-70 does not make very good lens for video -- also a very heavy lens. A great still lens though.

I have heard amazing things about the 17-55 IS.

Also Tamron's 17-50 VC

Personally, I like the old manual focus glass (I have a 28 f2.5, 50 f1.4, and 85 f/1.8) I have spent about $180 total on that glass and it is all really good (the 28 leaves a bit to be desired, but still isn't bad by any means. The 50 and 85 are very sharp wide open and REALLY sharp stopped down a bit

i dont need IS badly because i will be using either a tripod or steadicam rig. the stuff i usually get to work on is big budget but i still take advantage of being able to have my own equipment a lot of the times. but i also like to mess around and make short movies. i have no problem going with primes, but if there happens to be a great zoom lens that is also fast, just happens that most of them are also L series or at least really expensive. the 24-70 does have a great focal range that i can use. my only issue is i dont know other brands very well and sigmas equivalent 24-70 is about the same price anyway. im just going to continue to save up and by the time i have like $1300 or so. ill know better what i want to get out of my next lens

also wondering because im still very interested in shooting for the 24-70. if it is that heavy... would it damage my camera when using a tripod or steadicam rig. i have no clue how strong these cameras are but over time could it be bad using a heavy lens?

how do yall feel about the 17-55 2.8?

You can use old school mf lenses with adpaters its cheap and you get really sharp quality pictures/ video thats what i use right now till i can dump 3000 per lens

IMo i would say the thing needed most for this camera or any dslr is a stabilizer that is number 1
