so here is my question.
when i present h.s. senior photos to customers, they are in a 4x6 proof book.
from that proofbook parents are able to order enlargements.
i include in my packages, 8x10, 5x7 and wallet sizes.
is there a way to completely maintain the 4x6 format of the original photo when creating an 8x10 print.
i try to explain to people that there is a certain amt. of photo that is lost when enlarging unless they choose an 8x12.
am i correct in this??

Yes, you are correct. Today's digital SLR cameras are in a 3:2 aspect ratio (4x6, 8x12, etc). Any enlargements you do (8x10, 11x14, etc) will crop an area off the photo. That is why I leave enough space on the top and bottom to be able to crop to any size enlargement without chopping off a portion of their head.

Thanks!
I was thinking i was correct.
The hard part is, there was a close up photo that the mother loved and when it was in the 4x6 format, it was perfect, however, ofcourse, the 8x10 cropped. She called and was irritated and i explained to her that an 8x10 is not a true double enlargement of the original 4x6 format. In order for her to get that she would/could order an 8x12.
I am trying to educate the public on the fact that 8x10 aren't just doubles of the 4x6 in their hand.

THANKS for your input, i was hoping i was correct. Hoping i wasn't missing the boat completely!

Have a great day!

Nope, you're in the same boat. I will crop an image to the proper size before I send it to be printed. That way I control what gets cropped. Sometimes things just have to be cropped.

These could probably be helpful for you.

They aren't mine but were shared on another forum I belong to.

Thank you so much! it is good to have a reference point i suppose for customers.
I am finding that there are so many things that i need to have that i take for granted that the general public does not know.
(ie. examples of cropped images, framing info etc.)
THANKS again!

I don't sell 4x6 prints. I might sell a set of 4x5 prints in a gift package, but I don't even do 4x6 at all. So I don't have a problem with the format changing when I scale up to 8x10. Professional labs can do 4x5.

You could also do 8x12 and sell frames as well.

Of course, this is not a new problem. The 35mm format never did fit an 8x10 piece of paper, or 4x5 for that matter. Nor does it fit 4:3 or 9:16.
