I shot college football, the assignment was to shoot the home team, Gardner Webb:

It was mostly a running game, GW completed 12 short passes so little good in that department. I shot mostly with a 400 and 70-200 both on a mark IV. I tried to face GW both on offense and defense. My question is regarding positioning, end zone vs sideline. Follow the ball or try following a specific high probability receiver??

Thanks

Your photos look great. Nice tight crops with crisp subjects. You posted a lot of photos, which makes it hard to sift through. As a rule of thumb: no ball, no face, no number = no photo.

My question is regarding positioning, end zone vs sideline.

I prefer to work the sideline until the line of scrimmage is at about the 35 yard line; then I head to the endzone. I prefer to use the 300 2.8 though as I found the 400 was more restricting.

A little bit of both. The more you cover a team, the more you learn their plays and can expect who the ball is going to. Football is a long game. Spend some time following the ball and some anticipating a play.

Thanks Stan, your comment about the 300 vs 400 is interesting to me. When I shoot soccer which is what I do the most, I often abandon the 400 in favor of the 300 because it is so much easier to follow the play with a lens that I can hand hold.

Exactly my thoughts. I don't like being on a monopod.
