NOOB Question: How to set AEB for 50D

I have used AEB and it seems like it would really help get the best exposure in tricky situations.

How far apart do you set the brackets?

How have you set the increments 1/3 or 1/2 stops?

When do you use AEB?

Any other advise would be greatly appreciated.
