Forum Rules. No Politics. Remember? We've closed the odd thread or two over flagrant disregard of that rule.

I may very well be banned for this but, Jon, you are overly sensitive and I honestly find your "warnings" a bit childish.

"Nanny government" is a well known term and is in common use in our language.

1. nanny state 128 up, 46 down
buy nanny state mugs, tshirts and magnets
Any nation that has the government "holding the hand" of its citizens by levying lots of taxes, having trade protection, and having many economic regulations. It is used very pejoratively by people that believe in freer markets, private institutions, and tax cuts.

I say lighten up.

No problem Roy. It is nice to see that there are some people left that care about being correct.
I often submit my post and then realize I goofed a word or two and then quickly hit the edit button.
Generally I am anal about things like that. Although I have been known to just let a few slide and of course I sometimes use slang terms LOL! I warned you first haha. You can blame my daughter for that because when I started hanging around in computer land she would get so impatient when we would be chatting online and she would say she was going to fall asleep waiting for me to respond to her. She is the reason I gave way to the short form slang's like w/e and the like. I think you would cringe if you chatted on Yahoo with her because she types almost everything from words like ppl (people) to ttyl (talk to ya Later) which I am sure would just send you into a tither or two LOL!!
It doesn't bother me because I know she knows the correct spelling of the words and that she just has so much on the go at once that using those terms is faster for her.

You know, I'm a lot like that!

I'll generally check on a challenging word for spelling, but occasionally I let one pass that I actually know better, and sometimes won't even catch it until I see my post quoted -- my bad spelling immortalized!

And then the typos -- I catch most of them -- it's especially irritating because the laptop I use most of the time has some, well, keys that don't respond as wel -- it just happened in this sentence with the "u" in use. Most of the time I catch them...

But then there are those times, I'm typing away, and any post longer than a couple simple sentences I know it's likely to have typos and such but dang I'm in a hurry to get it posted, and proofreading a long post is such a drag, so I post it and then if I'm lucky I glance at it and see the errors starting to pop up. Damn -- now I have to edit my post and depending how late at night that is I may catch all the errors:)!

Dan, I'd back off on that -- your quote said

It is used very pejoratively by people that believe in freer markets, private institutions, and tax cuts.

It is a perjorative term used by those with a political view and best left alone here.

=it`s me;11781272]holy cow... strict `n nasty eh...there are a few...just a few...of my junior highs who push me to see how far they can go...//...but when I grabbed em by the scruff of the neck, they almost cried...

Problem I've got at the moment is that the school I work at a few lessons a week is NOT a state school. The parents are loaded. So, the kids - more often than not - have been brought up thinking they're "automatically" special. My worst student tried to tell me off on Friday for reading out the top marks in an English test (he was the bottom of the school, despite ability), then he threatened to contact the board of education, until I pointed out I'm freelance, no contract, not governed directly and will quite happily drag his parents to the BoE too, to see if they can explain why he thinks it's OK to punch younger children, break the window in the lunchroom, damage furniture, etc...
What a prat, he is.

interesting about the students. Sounds somewhat like the "Tiger mom" (external link) child rearing approach that's a hot topic in the current issue of Time magazine.

Thanks for the link. Sounds like about 50% of Japanese parents. And their kids are wonderful, albeit with the odd nervous tick here and there!

Hey Sky, thanks for the birthday wish!

You're welcome!

...//Back when I was in high school in the 1960’s, if you gave a teacher a dirty look, you got a weeks worth of detention....

Same for me. I really don't understand where all the "let's treat our child like a prince/princess" thinking has come from. Are parents so stupid/naïve as to think that a child with a computer in their room won't waste half their life online?

Yeah Simon,, my boss has often told me to toughen up a bit with my students.. Then again,, I have a great rapport with them..

Ah, but yours are so much older, Jurgen. I had the same with my adult-class last spring. Their motivation comes from within, so that's half the battle won, right there!

Man, a day goes by between me checking this thread and it's like a whole day has gone by!

:lol::lol::lol:

Anyway, Ferris Bueller was on A&E today -- I hadn't seen it in a few years so I ended up watching it. One of the really fun movies of the era!

What a fun movie that was!
And the clothes?!??!!? Hilarious!
Thanks for reminding me of something so lighthearted when "kids" are causing such grief at the moment!
:-)

Thanks Tony! I should have not included that particular definition.

What I saw here was a good, friendly conversation among adults. We didn't need a ruler on the knuckles.

Heh! Not a ruler on the knuckles, just a proper warning and "words to the wise"!

Simon,, most of my students range from mid teens to mid twenties.. Especially the girls can get very moody, probably hormonal, so I have to keep the humour alive in the classroom..

The other evening, one girl aged 16 told me outright she is in a bad mood.. I asked her why.. She told me the boys at her table were teasing her a bit.. I had to keep the mood light in the classroom.. So I just said to her, "Doi, naa minh tort".. Which loosely translated means "Yes, you've got a face (or expression) like you've smelled a fart"..

The class roared in laughter as did she..

Yup, but haven't seen it in a few years.

My current interests in TV have slid so far below "civilized" I dare not elaborate.

Probably mental backlash from the homogenized garbage my wife insists on watching.

WHERE'S THE TF?!?!?!??!
:D

But, I must apologise as I thought your students were all over 20, which means I've either forgotten (most likely) or skipped over (less likely) the post where you'd said the age-groups you teach.

In which case, what would you do?
