I think windows have a sweet spot, just not sure where that is.

As a person who rides a motorcycle I have busted more then a few side windows with just my hand. If you get so close to me that I can touch your car you are threatening my life. I tend to lose my cool, or what little cool I have.

The last time that happened it was a drunk driver and he thought it was really funny the look in my face when he cut me off. Dared me to come get him in his locked car. The look on his face when I was yanking him out of his driver window...I'll leave it there.

I'm not sure how much I really could help. Depression is a very strong illness, not much of what people would say at the time meant anything. In my multiple attempts, I never even thought to leave a note.

All I can do is share my feelings, and my vivid recollection of the experiences. I was never treated for depression, time just straightened me out.

Just my opinion. You have been there. You can tell them things do get better with time. You would have that type of creditability. I glad you got thru it.

They seem to break so easy when a small stone is thrown up from a truck in front of you.

Actually you are right.....I just googled how to break a car window and watched a video and all you need is a small piece of porcelain like that from a spark plug. Just throw it at the window.

OMG this was the show I watched on how hard it is to break a window...get ready to laugh!

Now that's just weird. Only yesterday that same clip was shown here in the UK on some TV channel.

Funny indeed.

Haha I know how he feels! The trouble is when you have a bloke laying in the car that you don't know whether he is alive or dead you don't think about technicalities, you just look around and grab the first thing that you can that you think will work. The only things there were the whipper snipper & lawn mower, no tools, no anything! The large potted plant I hurled through the sliding door smashed into little pieces so it was no good either. I probably could have just put my fingers over the top where the window was down a bit and reefed on it but hey, at the end of the day we got him out so that is all that matters. Sadly, now he has moved on with his life and got a new family we no longer have any contact. I think the embarrassment or shame would be too much if the new lady found out.

I've been a little absent recently, only popping in for some joy reading the comments and history lessons.

I can sympathize with the death at this time of year, on Dec 23 my Mother in Law passed from a bleed in the brain. Fortunately is was fairly fast, only 4 days in the hospital. The family is close and the big holidays were very special. We continued with the holidays, sad and sweet.

This was the 4th death in my immediate family this year or so. My sister in Nov 11 from cancer, her son in Feb 12 from suicide and a brother in May from a brain aneurysm.

My MiL was pretty special, and will be the person I miss the most. A rich full life, right there until the end. Soon to be 85 years old.

2012 began in pain, and ended in pain. But there was plenty of good living in there too. Need to remember the good times more than dwelling on the bad.

2013 will be different, I'm changing a few of the major items in my life. I will be getting rid of anything that does not add positively to my life.

On Monday I will be giving notice that I will be retiring in two weeks, just in time for my 55th. After 3 years building a project within a group that did not believe in it, and finally getting it where it needs to be, the management hired an outside manager (buddy of one of the other managers) to take over the project. I'm walking my knowledge out the door.

In February, we are heading for 3 weeks in Hawaii, Kona on the Big Island. A retirement gift to my wife, and I guess mine too.

In the meantime, I will be exploring other contract or part time opportunities as well as building my photography business. I can't stay home, I'd drive my wife nuts! I don't know how to "do nothing".

There are other issues, but they will be ones that count towards me and my family, and some will be sad, but most will be good.

So, I'm a little late in wishing all of you Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! May 2013 be a year of joy and accomplishment!

Year of the Snake, indeed.

Wow Jim that is a lot for one family in a year. I am wishing that 2013 is a awesome year filled with happier days and that your retirement is everything and more that you dreamed it would be.
I just got off the phone with the nurse because my dad has cancer and has for the last ten yrs been battling the decease but it looks like he won't win the fight this time. They say it is a matter of hrs or days at the most. They are giving him morphine to basically knock him out so he can go as peacefully as possible. He lived a pretty good life for most of his 83 yrs so that is a good thing.

Well from what I hear is that the corners are the best place to do it...supposedly you take a screw driver and pry it in the corners and the window will break.

Windows do have sweet spots - the corners.

Automotive windows are made out of safety glass. The windshield is two layers of glass with a very thin, transparent layer of plastic sandwiched inbetween. The outside glass is very strong and resistant to impact. It is designed to not break. The inside glass is actually quite weak, it is designed to break easily. The plastic holds all the pieces together. (if you see a smashed windshield you will notice that it will all be stuck together still) They are designed this way so that if a person is thrown forward they will just smash through the windshield, it avoids the "necklace" effect that has a tendancy to decapitate a person.

The side windows are designed to just fall apart. The glass will break into tiny pieces that are fairly rounded, rather than shards. This is safer as the broken glass is not very sharp when it breaks into that shape.

The trick to breaking windows - other than the windshield - is to use a sharp object. An automotive emergency hammer has a sharp point on it. If you held a screwdriver tip to the window, in a corner, and hit the handle with a hammer the window would fall apart.

A windshield is very difficult to break from the outside, and even if you broke the glass it would still hold together in one big sheet.

If a side window is down partly, just grab the top and pull on it.

December to March is a rough time of year for me. This Christmas wasn't too bad, but I was so busy that I barely noticed that it was Christmas.

Thanks, and you have my thoughts for the next few days. My Father went through the morphine treatment at the end, it was much better than the pain.

83 is pretty good, even if the last ten was a fight.

I don't pray, so will just wish you strength, and keep you in my thoughts.
