A leap year (or intercalary or bissextile year) is a year containing one additional day in order to keep the calendar year synchronized with the astronomical or seasonal year.

Yup, I get that.

Pretend that you were born on February 29th.

If I were I would have Frederic's problem.

But he didn't! That's why he was a slave to duty!

Of course, none of them really understood. Except, perhaps, the Astronomer Royal.

I would never have thought that G&S was popular in the wilds of Arizona!

Well, I don't exactly break into a chorus of "Poor Little Buttercup" every time I see a flower, but yes, I do love G&S.

I'm glad to hear it (I mean your love of G&S, not your reluctance to burst into song!).

As for G&S being popular in the wilds of Arizona, please bear in mind than one of our native daughters, Linda Ronstadt, did a damned good job of playing Mabel in "Pirates" on Broadway and in film.

Trust me on this. If you ever heard me sing, you'd understand and appreciate my reluctance to burst into song.

Hell, the last time I sang in the shower the hot water went off! The only way I can carry a tune is on stave sheets.

Not when it's sung with a Cockney accent!

Always get a chuckle out of the first lines:

"When a felon's not engaged in his employment
Or maturing his felonious little plan
His capacity for innocent enjoyment
Is just as great as any honest man."

I wish G&S were more popular around here right now. It seems like we've been on a long roll of tribute bands and comedians, and plays that I've never heard of.

A couple of hours down the road is a nice town called Stratford. Mega big Shakespeare town. It's the place to go see high quality plays. But they don't do much in the line of musicals.

Fortunately, I have friends that love plays and musicals. So when there is something good playing, I have folks to go with. My grandma used to take mom and I to see plays or the International Symphony Orchestra. My niece is turning 6 this summer, she'll be old enough to start enjoying stuff like that and I intend to take her.

Well, hey, here in the Pacific Northwest, the town of Ashland, OR is proudly dedicated to Shakespeare "stuff", it has a Festival that runs from February to October in which eleven plays on three stages are produced each season...

Not G&S, of course, but still...:)

That's just like Stratford. The Stratford Festival runs from May to October. They have 4 main venues, Festival Theatre (1,826 seats), Avon Theatre (1,090), Tom Patterson Theatre (480), and Studio Theatre (260). Festival Theatre is my favourite. They are all small enough that you always have a great view, acoustics are amazing, and it's intimate without being cramped.

I do have relatively good access to great venues for every sort of production. We have lots of small theatres in the area. Victoria Playhouse, Petrolia is in the next town over, where I went to high school. Two hours away, in Kitchener/Waterloo/Cambridge, there are several venues to choose from. We went to see Wicked last year. Three hours away is Toronto, with all of it's big productions.
