So what would his reasoning be? He doesn't want any strain on the mounts?

Yer kidding, right?

Sorry, it was my indirect way of getting some hints and tips for the young 'uns as to why being older isn't necessarily a bad thing....
Read on...

My camera gear? My computer gear? The car I'm currently driving? My A/V system? My house...oh wait, the bank still owns it for another 12:lol:...

Decent Single-Malt as a regular tipple, not as a special treat...Better Camera gear...Clean credit cards (this is a biggie!)...Retirement investments...Travel much more often under better conditions...And, probably the best of all, Silence.

....Today I was working with a 50+ yo photographer (really good at his job). He chastised me for putting his camera into his bag with the lens on. Apparently you should never do that. Is there any reason why you would want to take the lens off your camera before putting it in your bag? Or is it "old" advice from the film days?

I always have the last lens I used attached to my camera(s) in my bag.. I've been doing this for as long as I can remember..

And in addition to Jurgen's excellent response, taking a lens off a camera is somewhat like taking a steering wheel out of a car...

Is this referring back to Roger's 20 year-old hooker?

Heh!

SN, I think that some people just get set in ways that "seem" to be right to them for some obscure reason. Now, maybe in the context of this thread getting older might have made him, well, cranky about this type of thing as well. But I can imagine some time years ago he got some idea in his head from somewhere that "bad things can happen" if you do that. Sort of like things we hear here all the time. People may not get cranky about it, and yet I can imagine that if someone took my camera and did something to it that I considered unsafe to the camera I might be short and quick with an admonition to not do that.

But really there is no logical reason to take the lens off, although I've read people here state that they do every time they put the camera in the bag.

I don't see any reason why keeping the lens on is a big deal...if the locking bayonet mount isn't sturdy enough to hold the lens while stored, then I guess it's not good enough to hold during use, now, is it?

Now, if my gear were being handled by the American Tourister gorilla, I might be more concerned, but the fact that my lens is attached to the body would be the least of my issues...

Actually, I do this too.

If I'm just moving from place to place locally I'll leave it on, but for any storage, long travel (church to shoot site) or finished for the day, I dismount the lens and pack them up.

My first photography bag design pretty well enforced the habit as it barely fit the gear (not the fault of the bag, it was the suddenly being able to afford more/bigger gear), and the low profile at the top of the knapsack was great for the body. Since then the bags have been aimed more at travel ability and not access, so same habit.

I still have not found a bag that meets all/most my varying needs. So I have several and choose what I need when I pack for a trip or event.

Might be time to review my habits.

I think it comes down to this dudes particular habit. After talking to my friend (who assisted the guy for a week) it turns out the guys a bit...let's just say...easily angered if you don't do things his way. ;)

I can think of no reason to store the body and lens separately EXCEPT, you don't have to take the extra time to remove the lens if the wrong one happens to be on the body, and you need to shoot something in a relative hurry. That wouldn't be a consideration for me, though, because I use the 24-70 for 90% of my shooting with the 5D2, and the 24-105 on the 60D. I play the percentages.

I'm not short. I'm concentrated awesome!

It seems to me that every opportunity to leave the lens on is one less opportunity to add to the dust inside.

Today I was working with a 50+ yo photographer (really good at his job). He chastised me for putting his camera into his bag with the lens on. Apparently you should never do that.

It sounds like he formed the habit with film cameras & is too set in his ways to change now?

I grew UP before I grew old. That only means that I am not vertically challenged! And now that OLD has been defined I am proud to say I qualify.

Glad we sorted out SN's nagging colleague's odd behaviour...
In a nutshell, you gotta be a bit of a 'nut' to habitually remove lenses from cameras unless you're travelling a long way and have NO INTENTION of taking any pictures en-route.

I emboldened the important word there ^^^^^
And I trust your daughter has "Canon" across her shoulder thanks to your influence?
If so, "Hurrah for Tony!!!"

Good to have you here, joining in with the OLDER photographers' group...just don't make too much noise, as Tony's friends are trying to sleep!

Well of course, Simon -- didja think I'd buy her a Nik for her B-Day?

Wow, just saw this thread. There is no upper age limit, it seems, so a grumpy old man like me can post here? :)
