Hey everyone! I've noticed that there aren't too many "how do I get this look?" threads here. You guys are slackin'!

Anyways, I've been following this guy on Flickr and I can't help but say he's probably one of my favorite photographers out there. I've always loved processing my photos using darker tones and a bit of dodging and burning, but this guy takes it to another level with his ability to isolate his subjects with color and clarity.

Check his work out. http://www.benoitp.com/ (external link)

He shoots with a 5DMKII and 35mm f/1.4L. The majority of his "stranger" photos seem to be done with natural light. Beyond that, his processing skills make the photos appear almost 3 dimensional. His latest photos appear to resemble medium format as their tones are very even and almost muted. I love it.

I'm pretty savvy with photoshop but no matter how much I experiment, I can't seem to match his look. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to replicate his look for my own exploits. I just want try out his process and see if I can learn something new along the way. I'd definitely give him credit as well. I can't stop slacking at work and looking at his Flickr.

Let's put our heads together!

That would be great to know from the source. Though, I don't think I could get him to travel to the US...I think he's asking $4,000 USD.

He does amazing work, I'd do things that would make a priest cry to find out his secret.

His work varies in pp but I messed around with a shot of mine last night which was inspired by his older stuff which was more colorful and smooth. I would have done a better job if I had used my tablet.

I added some color gradients to the top and bottom (light oranges and blues). I also did some dodging and burning around the highlights of the whole photo as well as his skin. I believe I created another layer and set it to screen/lighten and painted on it with a 3% white brush around the specular highlights to give that dreamy look. I also painted on that same layer with some green to give off that ambient color cast.

It's definitely not on par with his stuff but I feel I'm getting somewhat closer...I suppose I'll just keep racking my brains over it and keep you guys updated!

I like the way you think! Let's find a Priest. I'll notify Benoit of our actions and demand some information from him! We'll host a live broadcast and if our demands aren't met, Mr. Priest is getting a purple nurple.

I'm more impressed with his creative eye than his post-processing. While his post is cool his sense of artistry in how he frames and visualizes his shots are far superior.

I agree as well. I love how he finds not so appealing characters and creates beauty. The thing I like about his processing is, most of his shots were naturally lit yet they have a multiple lighting feel to them.
