Oh boy if ever I needed a reason to splash out on longer glass then my recent attempts to photograph these tiny, timid and hyperactive little birds is it. These two were shot with the 400mm f/5.6L on a tripod from about 4 metres away. I'm not 100% happy with the results so far, I know I can do better and will keep trying!

The first shot is excellent, and worthy of being your avatar. Very well done. On the second one I wish the head was turned to it's right slightly.


You can take my 100-400 L away when you pry it from my cold, dead fingers.

I like the perches in both shots. I wish I could get within 4 meters of my birds. The DOF is mighty shallow, could you shoot at f/8? My understanding is that those long lenses are not at their best wide open.
