I'm always looking for tips to get better at portraits. Any advise would be great. I used the 85mm and speedlight on camera for fill.

It's a sweet shot, but there's a definite lack of contrast and color "pop"; it's hard to tell from this small web image, but it looks like it's a little over-exposed from the flash. Try using flash exposure compensation to decrease the amount of light coming from the flash - maybe start at -2/3 stop and see how that looks. You'll probably get the best result from fill flash by shooting in manual shooting mode rather than Portrait mode, although outside with plenty of light Av (aperture priority) might work well also (inside, with darker ambient lighting Av tends to use a very slow shutter speed). With Av you pick the aperture/f-stop, and the camera will set the shutter speed based on the ambient lighting. Your flash will still provide the fill, and you still might need to adjust the flash exposure. Here's the way one person uses Av and fill flash - https://photography-on-the.net ….php?p=692113&postcount=3

This is a great portrait.

The background has a perfect exposure, the girl not. The on-camera flash is not the easiest flash to get right. It seems like you took this shot in the shadows or on a cloudy day, so I think that you would have got a great result even without the flash.

But the exposure of the girl is not blown, so with PP you should be able to just darken her a little. Then it would be perfect. Use layer mask, and make shure that you only darken the brighter part. The background is great as it is.

Thank you for the tips. I have been trying out AV mode lately but was not sure how to incorporate the flash. This is why I love this forum!

When you have the time, you might want to take a look at this - http://neilvn.com …h-photography-techniques/ (external link) - really great stuff on how to use flash well.
