I'd say you are! I like the shot :) I think it may have been better without the cell tower but It is interesting to look at, the intersection of nature and technology.

Thanks Merlin! I was on my way him from work and just had to stop and snap a couple of pics of this sunset. While I was shooting I kept trying to compose the tower out of it, but when I looked at the photos it just seemed like it belonged. I'm really getting hooked on photography fast, I can't wait now to learn more and get better!
Any constructive criticism about the shot? I'm happy with it, but I'm always open to learning what I could do better :)

Ok, here we go. Full marks for geometry - you've placed all of the elements in all the right places. I love how you spotted the lighting of the clouds. I think that the tower works really well - what does not work for me are the trees and bushes, they distract and are not very attractive. A clean horizon would be much better. If you could have placed yourself beyond them...

Normally I would absolutely avoid taking a shot of a risen, obscured sun - no amount of ND filtration can cope, but in this case it works.

My general advice would be that to get the best sunrise and sunset shots you need to see, frame and organise the shot BEFORE you look through the viewfinder. It takes practice, but the rewards will come. Look critically at the scene and if it does not add up - move on to something else.

Hope this helps
David

Thanks David!! That's exactly the kind of help I was looking for. I knew the image wasn't amazing or anything, but I also didn't know what i should do to improve and your information helps me a lot! Thanks for taking the time to give me some pointers.

I haven't purchased any filters yet, in fact the only lens I have besides the kit 18-135 that came with my 60D is a Canon 50mm 1.8(got that one for portraits). Any particular lenses or filters you would recommend I start with?

I looked at your site and your shots are amazing by the way. #50, #77 and #100 are my favorites :)
