LCD Protection

What should I use to protect my LCD display from scratches and facial oils?
I did a search here and saw PDA protectors mentioned, as well as, packing tape. The packing tape makes me a little nervous..lol..seems a bit too sticky.
Not sure what a PDA protector is either, but believe I heard it was recommended by Popular Photography.

Clear tape or Contact

I applied clear packing tape to my new 20D display in mid-March. Now, about 6000 shots later, the tape has not peeled up. It seems to have absorbed some micro-scratches (which was the point), so I'll probably replace it sometime soon.

"PDA" stands for personal digital assistant. There are clear plastic covers made for the small LCD displays of Palm devices and such which work well for camera displays. There is also a protective cover made with a door and side shields which both protects and makes the display more visible in high light environments. I forget the manufacturer's name- will post if I can find it.

You could look for ideas in one of the many other threads about this topic.

To be honest I don't bother protecting mine, No marks or scratches on any of them yet. I've currently got 8 digital cameras, had 9 but got rid of one a little while back. All are fine and none get any special treatment and as I said, no marks. I'm also told the rear LCD is covered by a bit of plastic anyway, which I'm guessing the purpose of is to protect the LCD from damage. I'm also told this plastic cover takes only a couple of minutes to replace, is easily done and costs very little indeed.

Just sounds like overkill to me, but each to their own. I've heard alot of people use PDA static protectors or Hoodman products and the likes.

you knowI don't use anything. I have had my 10d for more than 2 years and I haven't got a single strach on the LCD. I don't worry about the facial oils because I just get a cloth and wipe it clean.

My phone has more straches on it and I have had that just on a year.

When I feel that way, then I just don't post, especially after answers have already started coming in from the other 35,000 members. I agree it's good to alert new people to the search feature, but with stuff like "many other threads on this topic", it does come across a bit harsh. We like to have new people posting, not lurking afraid to post because they might get a slap on the wrist. Also, we might not find out about new ideas if the question is never asked again, like Bob Gross's packing tape idea which he has only been using for about 6 months.

Just for kicks, I did a search. Bob Gross answered this question at least 4 times in the past month alone with his packing tape suggestion. Now that's patience.

Me, I don't use anything on the LCD right now, although I might try the tape trick. It's not like a PDA or cell phone where it is in your pocket all the time and might be scratched by keys or coins. The oils are a bit of a pain, and I do fear I may scratch the LCD wiping it clean, but so far so good.

Come one, Bob, cut me some slack. The point was that if we always pushed people to use search instead of asking questions, we'd never find out about new, innovative ideas. You said mid-March, which is pretty close to six months.

You guys seem to want to make leaps of logic. I started using tape over the display in November 2002.

Besides, I think the search function stinks. Once in a great while, it will find something that I am looking for, but mostly it fails.

I remembered the company that makes the camera-specific LCD protectors, which run between $20-30 US. Their name is "Hoodman" and they have a web site which you'll find quickly with a Google search.
