I am a wedding photographer. I have received founds via paypal. I haven't accepted the payment yet.
My question: can anybody scam me by paying via paypal?
I just want to make sure that I don't make any mistake....
Thanks for sharing you ideas!
Otto

It's possible, but they have a pretty detailed dispute resolution process.. but just be aware that in most cases paypal sides with the buyers and returns their money, but that is usually pertaining to items purchased. I have no clue how it works when services have been rendered.

Exactly! I will render services. Also, the payment would be categorized as deposit for wedding photography services thus not refundable...!
I have received funds before via paypal however I have always met my clients before they sent me the payments...

If you think they may try to dispute just to get the money back, don't keep any money in the paypal account, transfer it to your bank.

When I've fought to get money returned (for items I purchased and never received, it was a con artist), I usually didn't get much/if any back, because Paypal will only refund from their account.

(Not really an expert on this at all so take it with a grain of salt. But it can't hurt!)

Paypal usually requires you to keep either a valid cc/debit card on file or a bank account. If they return the funds to the buyer they will just debit whatever method of payment you have on file for the balance.. I have had this happen to me personally.

Its not that difficult to get your own credit card processing ability. It's actually very very easy... I think all you need is a business checking account.

Did the buyer select "goods" or "services" when they specified what the payment was for? If it was services, you should be OK. If it was goods, they can scam you with an "Item not received" complaint.

I would be a little nervous about this transaction. The buyer has a lot of power with merchant services like paypal. It may cost you dispute fees and loss of deposits and time...

It's best to keep PayPal tied to an auxiliary account whose level of funds you can control, as opposed to tying it to a primary checking account - whoops, there goes the rent!

And use a different bank for the aux account.

Is this for an initial deposit? I'd take it for the deposit, but put in the contract that the balance must be paid by Cash/Cashiers Check.

I believe after 90 days, they can't claim it back, and if they do claim it back before 90 days is up, I guess you won't be shooting their wedding.

I know but it is expensive. How much do they charge?
