Found this pair of burrowing owls in Cape Coral Florida. Notice that the female has been banded. Shot with the 300D and the 400L f5.6 prime.

Great shot Terry! My only suggestion is that the strong light left their right(left?) side eyes buried in the shadows. Not much can be done about that though. Still a great shot!

Great pictures,

Appears as though they were on the ground. Is that typical?

Lovely portrait.

Yes, that is typical. Burrowing owls are only about 6 inches tall and live in underground burrows. I had a tip on where to find a burrow and as I walked up, the larger of the two birds popped out of the ground followed by the smaller one. They stood like this for a few minutes before the large owl flew up on a perch above the burrow. Eventually the smaller owl hopped back in the ground and the larger flew off.

This is a great shot... love the crop that gives it some depth as well as DOF too!

Glad you guys like the image. From talking to people in the neighborhood, I got the impression that the owls are somewhat used to people and having their picture taken

There are probably 8-10 burrows near the library in Cape Coral and while the city encourages you to visit and take photos, there are rules on how close you can get. This image is almost full frame as I was using a 400L. I probably took 8-10 images of the "couple", but this is the best in regards to them both looking directly at me.

The really odd thing is less than three blocks from this burrow is the bald eagle's nest where I also managed to get a shot of a "couple". The eagles and the owls photos were taken less than an hour apart! In case you missed it, I'll post it again...Talk about a very good day of shooting!

Great shots. I love the "howdy birds" - from the owls bobbing head, like it's saying "Howdy!"

Great shots, my only critique: you should start a new thread with the eagles, lol
