1. when the camera powers on and powers off, look closely at the lens barrel movement -- make sure it operates smoothly.
2. do an extremely close look at the body, how the pieces fit together, and the screws -- for any indication of dents, bumping, or disassembly, etc.
3. take your time with this one: look down into the lens. If I remember, best when lens is not zoomed. You may have to move the camera around a bit and try to have indirect sunlight or other clear light behind you -- look for sand, dirt, or other obvious 'specs' on the inside SIDES of the lens barrel. And of course on the lens elements.
4. if you can take several types of shots with the camera and then look at them on your PC -- do so.
5. with the camera Off and battery removed (and current owner present), roll it around... upside down etc and listen for any rattling inside.
6. white screen test -- how critical this is for you is up to you. Almost all cameras will have some dust specs. http://www.cleaningdigitalcameras.com/inspecting.html (external link)
7. LCD -- that's up to you
8. controls and dials.... do they work
9. do a general search for vers.req and ver.req --- you can set up an SD card with (one of) these files on it, and get the total number of shots taken (if you care to know)

Good luck with your new camera. I wouldn't expect perfect... a good condition used Gx will be still nice.

G9 would be better than G7 IMO

Watch out for the G9. They have a known issue of 2 screws falling out inside and shorting out a circuit board.

This is a known issue but I cannot tell you if all of them were affected or just a certain batch. And Canon says nothing. . . .

Through my research I have seen references to the G7 with the same issue.

If the camera is working, it is easy to take apart and check. Very easy.

My G9 worked perfect until one day I tried to power it on and it was dead.

A,

I'm sure Bob's YU will chime in with his experience.
Mine was specifically.... 'yes' I heard a rattle -- not 'shaking' the camera, but simply rotating it around different axes after the camera got 'stuck' with lens open and would not retract nor would it power on again. THEN, after more moving and some gentle shaking... I did not hear any noise. I am guessing the screw got stuck somewhere in a tight space.

In my case, I had it repaired by not Canon repair place. They confirmed the screw-loose problem and fixed everything, sealed and taped the screws in place to not come loose again.

I'll save Bob some breath: "stupid, stupid Canon... even out of warranty you could have acknowledged the problem and given owners a break at 50% off for the repair or otherwise prorated it somehow --- but it is unworthy of you and the brand to deny it is a problem or ignore it without explanation". (I am not intending to put words in BYU's mouth... only reflect the sentiment)

I never did shake the camera because I did not find out about the issue until it was too late.
I vaguely recall noticing a rattle in the camera but I am unsure. If so, I never thought anything about it.

Congrats! I hope you have good luck with the camera, and great experiences in using it.

BTW, it seems G9 sellers are still asking above $300-340 usd in the SF Bay area, perhaps in a few cases you'll see one at ~275. So I think you may have found a great value. In the US, my repair (and cleaning) at 3rd party service cost ~$120 including shipping -- the point being the G9 could be a longterm keeper.

It is very easy to take it apart and check the screws while the camera still works. I have some other posts about this and if you want to check yours, I will outline the info here for you if you want.
